The fabric is so nice on most things I just hate to let go.

OMG! Fabric? Houndstooth! I disposed of all my Houndstooth jackets. They weren't just black & white. I had multiple colors and they were so classy looking. I don't know what the fabric is called (maybe not "houndstooth"), but some of the jackets looked like they were hand-woven and the fabric was very heavy with a nice lining to keep the shape with square shoulders. When I wore them, I'd get compliments all the time.
Oh well ... in the age of covid, I have no place to wear such items. .. And, I'm retired, ... and I don't have a waistline anymore.
I had a very, very nice houndstooth jacket that I could no longer wear after 2 years secondary to weight loss. I gave it to a non-profit organization run by a lady in our community. I saw that coat on the lady who ran that organization, wearing it. I wanted to walk up to her and say, in front of her business associates "you took that jacket out of the donation pile."
But at least it was being worn, used, someone was enjoying it.
Isn't that the important thing?

So beautiful ... and so useless.
Anyone remember St. John knits?
Times are so different now.
I have the same illness and in the same situation. And yes, yes, yes, I do remember St.John and used to love that brand.

Our house is on the small side and we have plenty of closet and cupboard space so I can't say I've experienced your sadness. I think it's good to get rid of excess things that weigh a person down. I'm still adjusting to covid sadness thinking about a year that flew by and I accomplished very little.
