I think the same as you...There's always a crunch and busy time for tax professionals this time of year .Unless someone was sick in the hospital, with all the technology and options available today for filing why would the IRS need to extend the deadline to everyone....There's even an option where the IRS can do your taxes for you.....

Hedge:" People have always been able to file for an extension when necessary, so what's the point in disrupting the expected standard on that too?"
FYI: You are charged a 5% interest fee on outstanding balances owed to the IRS!!! Who wants that?

no one official mentioned that this would apply to everyone.

I'm replying to the title and opening post. OP doesn't mention business filling.

At one time they were considering this....and then it was changed to small businesses and those impacted by the virus....

for some yes; more problematic for small businesses. i don't know about seniors who get senior center help who won't have people dropping in to help, don't skype, etc. this would put less pressure on IRS personnel too.
Seriously doubt seniors who operate a business have to rely on the community senior centres to prepare and submit their business taxes.
I can see changing the date from April 15th as confusing to a large part of the population, creating more work, calls, mailings from the IRS.

it's already been extended for state taxes in California - to 6/15.

FYI: Affected taxpayers are granted an extension to file 2019 California tax returns and make certain payments until June 15, 2020
Who decides who is "affected"? We all are.

businesses and seniors are 2 separate categories. Cali tax date already extended to 6/15 due to disruptions. not uncommon when emergency declared.
we shall see. it is being advocated by CPA groups and U S Treasury. also a consideration: is IRS operating at full capacity ?

from FTB
Sacramento – The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) today announced special tax relief for California taxpayers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Affected taxpayers are granted an extension to file 2019 California tax returns and make certain payments until June 15, 2020, in line with Governor Newsom’s March 12 Executive Order.
“During this public health emergency, every Californian should be free to focus on their health and wellbeing,” said State Controller Betty T. Yee, who serves as chair of FTB. “Having extra time to file their taxes helps allows people to do this, as the experts work to control the spread of coronavirus.”
This relief includes moving the various tax filing and payment deadlines that occur on March 15, 2020, through June 15, 2020, to June 15, 2020. This includes:
The FTB’s June 15 extended due date may be pushed back even further if the Internal Revenue Service grants a longer relief period.
Taxpayers claiming the special COVID-19 relief should write the name of the state of emergency (for example, COVID-19) in black ink at the top of the tax return to alert FTB of the special extension period. If taxpayers are e-filing, they should follow the software instructions to enter disaster information.
The FTB will also waive interest and any late filing or late payment penalties that would otherwise apply.
