Usually Social Security sends updates via USPS so when I received two emails from "Social Security" this week, I didn't open them.  Just deleted them both.

Curious is anyone else received anything from Social Security or were these, in fact, SPAM and I was correct in deleting them?  TIA.

@BirkiLady

You must have missed the email saying that paper notices are being discontinued?

If this email address is what you've registered with the SS administration, checking the return email address will tell you what you need to know.

Unless it lands in your spam filter, give these notices the benefit of the doubt.  You're missing important information.

Re: Has anyone rec'd emails for Social Security this week?

I would simply delete the email and sign into Social Security from lthe website like I do with every other piece of email that wants me to sign in. Do it yourself from lthe browser instead of clicking on a link.

@Tinkrbl44

Thanks so much!  I'll log into Social Security to find out what information I've missed. Something "told" me it might be important (and it appeared official) so I did not block it! Glad I asked a question. Smiley Very Happy

Re: Has anyone rec'd emails for Social Security this week?

I've been receiving Social Security since 2012. I have never received an email. What would they be emailing about? I get the notice late in the year with my new SS amount for the next year and the tax info. in january. Both of these come USPS mail.

I received one a few weeks ago.  It has to do with how in the future you will access your account.  You will have to use the site login.gov.  I set it up, it is a lot more secure.  Using the login.gov requires the two step verification.  I have been setting up a lot of my online financial accounts using this method.  It is more secure.

Yep, my DH and I also received this email from SSA gov too and have both now switched to the Login.gov sign in. With all the hackers running amuck I wondered about it too, but then read this article:

"The Social Security Administration is transitioning all SSA gov users who made their accounts before 2021, to the Login.gov platform. Any beneficiary who already has a Login.gov account doesn't need to take any action. More than five million customers have already made the switch. SSA says the change aims to simplify the sign-in process, while providing more secure access to online services."

So if you made your online SSA account prior to 2021 and haven't already switched, when you go to log in to your account at SSA gov like always you'll see there will be a message there telling you that you will have to change to the Login gov sign in as the former will no longer be supported.

I don't know if this is the same info as OP received, but this is the email info we got:

Important Changes to Access Your Social Security Account!

"Soon you will no longer be able to sign in to your online Social Security account using your Social Security username and password. To access Social Security online services, including my Social Security, you will need to create a Login.gov or ID.me account.

This change simplifies your sign-in experience and aligns with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to our online services.

If you are one of the millions of account holders who already use Login.gov or ID.me account to sign in, you do not need to take any action."

Then it goes on to tell you to sign into your SSA gov online account (you go to the official site like you normally would) and there you'll see the info/explanation at sign in and instructions to follow to switch to the Login gov sign in.

I didn't think it was too bad time-wise and procedure-wise to set up, and it still all works smoothly when I sign into SSA, so hopefully that's all done now. Woman Wink

The emails might have been about the hacking. I thinks millions social security numbers were compromised from their website. My husband's social security number was compromised, but he has a lock on his SSN.

@Redshoes07 , how did he know his was compromised and how did he put a lock on his SSN?  I have all three credit bureaus frozen but is there a way to lock SSN?  TIA

I have not received an email from Social Security, and if I did, I would not open it. I go to the Social Security website and login. There, I get all of the information that I need.

@WsmomIt is through the credit bureau he has them frozen, if anyone tries to get any credit they will alert him. Our son checked on some website where you have to put in so information and it showed my husband's number was compromised.

Oh perfect, @Redshoes07 .  That's what I have.  Thanks!

I follow RichonTech on Instagram and he had a place to go to check it out, too, but I couldn't access it.
