We have our landline because it's tied into our security system.  Yes, we can get rid of LL.  Then the security co will have to update our system whenever new technology is added, at least that's my understanding from conversation with security co guy. He'd do it if I requested.

Our system works great right now.  I don't want to worry about having things tweaked for each new tech adjustment.  I don't see them but once a year when they come to check on system.  The rest of the year it's working. (I know because once in a while I mess up and set it off.)  Anyway, I'm not looking to mess up the way it is now. Never change a winning game.

In addition, we live in a small town.  We've had our LL for 40 years.  Once in a great while someone will call us on that number.  This year it was an elderly gentleman close to my dad's age, who was friends with my husband years ago when DH was still working.  It was nice to chat with him.  Might have missed that call if not for the old LL number.  That guy passed away a few months back.  My dad still occasionally calls our LL, too, when he can't get me on my cell.

We have a landline because DH has AT&T and the signal is spotty where we live.
It's just as easy for us to block numbers on our landline as it is on our cell.

On a cell phone it's not that simple. I would get the same scam call every day from a different phone number. So I could block yesterday's number but tomorrow it would be a new one. It went on for months.  They are getting more tricky every day.  I was blocking new numbers every day but still getting the calls. They spoof different numbers from all over the nation.

Re: Has anyone noticed the knew phone scam trick?

       I often get calls on my landline that say Private Number or Invalid Number.  Sometimes the number does show up on the dial. I don't answer any phone call if I don't recognize the number or Id name.

       If they don't leave a message, their number is blocked.  My message tells caller...'this is your one chance to communicate with someone at this number.  Leave a message or your number will be blocked.'  I figure the call isn't important if they don't bother to leave a message.  Amazing how many callers do not leave a message!!!

@ID2 You absolutely amaze me. You are always making these general and across the board statements. There are many reasons why one would have a landline. I have a landline and a cell phone.....that is my choice. A land line is very good thing to have with a power failure and for a number of other reasons.

@corita  I actually like your message very much.  I may change my message to the same.  However, when the call says "Private Caller", I don't have the technology to block the caller.  I have to have a number shown to block.

The scammers are learning that by using Private Caller (or an unlisted number) most people can't block those calls.

Why, because maybe like me they don't want to walk aroundd 24/7 with the cell phone in their hand...

When you go to bed at night do you keep it under your pillow so you can hear it in case of an emergency?

Our daughter and son-in-law work a lot of restaurant closing shifts, my husband has elderly parents - so yeah, we need to be able hear a phone ring in the middle of the night.

@Georgiagrama

       My DD keeps telling me that there is no real person calling me on those calls, that it a computer/robotic thing.  And I guess I know that, but it gives me a big 'gleeful' feeling when I shut them down with my message!!

I still have a landline because I don't want a high cost cell phone that I can text, tweet, and whatever else you can do.  All I need a cell phone for is to call someone in an emergency.  If I want to get a message to someone I either send them an email or call them on my land line.  I don't need all those dumb things that people do and pay hundreds of dollars to do them.  AND I resent that you would suggest for me or anyone else to get rid of our landlines.  Have a good day.
