Has anyone noticed the new phone scam trick?

[ Edited ]

Most of the time, if I don't recognize a number, I don't answer my phone.  When we get a call, the number scrolls across the bottom of our TV, so we will either answer the phone or not.

Last night, we got a call from a "private number".  Thinking it might be one of my daughters, (they both have land lines and private numbers that they occasionally use) I answered the phone.  It was a national survey company, so of course, I just hung up.

Two hours later, the same company called again.  Again the message scrolled across our TV as "Private caller" and again, I thought it might be one of my daughters.

If there is a way to block a private caller, I don't know it.  I can block a call when it's a number, but this new trick has me confounded.

Is there no end to the trickery?

We just let them leave a message, we can call them back.

Common sense is now so rare, having it is like having a superpower.

It depends on your phones and/or your service, I would imagine.

I've had 'private number' blocked for quite a while.   Sometimes I get one call after another from private and am glad that they are stopped before they can leave a message.   Well, they can't on my landline because I have the voicemail turned off.

I hope this stuff is fixed some day.  Spoofing numbers should be not only illegal but the phone companies should be able to preclude them from even getting through with spoofed information.   It doesn't seem like it should be that complicated.

My husband and I finally got rid of our land line and now use Tracfones. If you are not on my contact list I do not answer the call.

I just got one of the "Grandmother " scams, he said he was my grandson and needed some money, when I asked his name and which grandson, he hung up!

I really don't know why anyone has a landline phone anymore? Why complain about unwanted calls when its a simple task to block/remove any scam calls with a cell phone.

@ID2   You can't block a number on a landline call unless you have the number.  If it is a private caller, you don't see the number.   We are not big cell phone users so we keep our landline.  We keep our landline because we like it and we aren't dependent on a battery to insure our calls, especially if we are without power.

I have a landline, and I just let the answering machine take any and all messages.

@chickenbutt.  Many of these annoying calls originate overseas.  It's almost impossible to police operations outside of the country.  As soon as engineer outwit the technology they're using, they come up with something better to get through.

I have a landline because I live in a dead zone when it comes to my cell phone. I can go down the lane and get service but not in my house. Many landline users hang onto theirs because their power often goes out.
