Re: Has anyone noticed the new phone scam trick?

I have a landline and a very cheap cell phone "for emergencies" ( LIke if I drive off a 1000 foot cliff or go into the river on my weekly trip to Walmart, which I've made without incidence for twenty years. And, there are no cliffs or rivers on my way to Walmart!!! just your basic run of the mill streets and roads.

I think people have been conned ( er, trained) to think they MUST have the newest phone and best plan or else they are defective in some way.

And still have a landline???? What do you think this is ......1950?!?!??!)

After I retired, from a job where I was a supervisor and took 50 calls a day on the company provided I-phone, I vowed I would NEVER allow a phone to control my life again. I ONLY have the cheap cell because if I DO travel anywhere, there are no longer pay phones or public phones. I can't hear it when it rings in my purse. I NEVER give out the number to anyone.

They can call my landline or not, I don't care. ANd I'll get to it when I get to it.

A friend recently saw my lowly Tracphone and said "THAT"S your phone?!?!?!?!" as if I was a diseased leper.  He is in debt up to his eyeballs, but HAS to have the latest I-phone and expensive plan, in order to impress.....who again????

I have a landline. I have a car without "navigation" and "blue tooth" ( and YES I know what both of those are).

I would bet the MOST people travel the SAME routes every day, and lived just as well before they had a phone in thier hands 24/7.

I have a cheap cell phone and a landline.

And yet, I live on.

PS: I found out you do NOT have to answer ANY call if you don't want to ( much to the chagrin of some of my friends who practically DEMAND to know why I didn't pick up on the 2nd ring, or, text them immediately. They honestly beleive the world will stop spinning if I haven't opened thier selfie with thier bologna sandwich picture from lunch today.)

They are selling cleaning rags on QVC today, repurposed as "face cloth must haves"......I guess my poor face will suffer because along with using a landline, I still was my face with regular wash cloths....

Yawn.

You must know my mother-in-law.  However, she will not leave a message and will just keep calling

I thought only charities and political calls were exempt from the DO NOT CALL LIST LAW  ....BUT the FCC also allows Survey Calls to be exempt....and to me they are nothing more than a sly telemarketing call..... I normally dont answer and let my voice mail and an answering machine screen all calls on cell phones/landline....but thinking it was my sister...I picked up the phone the other day and it was a "survey" on time shares....I hung up Woman Frustrated  We dont need these nusiance calls!!!

Private number designations are not new, they've been around for several years.  If you don't know who is calling you, just let it go to voicemail.

@Spurt  That's exactly what happened to me.  Both of my daughters have land lines, and they both have unlisted numbers which show up as "private caller".  Thinking it was one of them, I answered the phone and yep, it was a survey. Ugh!  Now that I've picked up my phone, they know that my number is a legitimate number and they know I can't block them. I expect many more of their calls.

Re: Has anyone noticed the new phone scam trick?

My personal policy with my cell phone is once I see the same number three times with no voice mail message I block the number. Unfortunately people/companies that make these spam calls just use another number and start over again. I hope one day there will be a law that terminates all of these type calls.

@CANDLEQUEEN

Thank you, well stated!  We also have both a land line as well as cell phones.  Our land line is bundled with our wifi so, it's no big deal.  DH prefers using the home phone.  We can block calls and do.  There are probably hundreds that have been blocked and I'm probably nearing the limit.  I can also silence the phones so they don't ring when we don't want to be disturbed.  If it's important, the caller will leave a message.

Sad that we have to justify to strangers what we choose to do.
