Has anyone here ever had a pet rat?

I held a little rat at the pet store today. It kind of creeped me out at first but she ended up being the sweetest little thing and kind of funny. I was really surprised that she seemed to have a personality and, believe it or not, she had the sweetest face. I was just wondering how much "upkeep" there is to one. I would like to have one here for my 8 yr. old grandaughter. She loves all animals and I miss having a pet in the house since we had to put our dog down several yrs. ago. The pet store clerk told me some of them live to be 10 yrs. old and they bond to humans. Just wondering if anyone here has one.
