@cuddlesmama Not from Amazon,, but years ago I came home one afternoon to find a carton of a dozen bottles of wine which I had not ordered. The packing slip had my address, but not my credit card number. I called the company. The CS rep told me to take a bottle for myself, to please tape the box shut but leave it where it was. They would arrange for pickup. I called a second time several days later and told that CS rep the story, I got another promise they'd take care of it. Never happened. I and every body I gifted enjoyed that good red wine- cost then was over $240!

I've also heard if the scam that @AnnieBelle describes and have known people who received unordered merchandise. Nothing ever happened as a result, however. I wouldn't worry about it. If you can use the merchandise, keep it and enjoy it.

How is it a scam to receive free stuff?

Do you have Alexa? Maybe Alexa accidently heard you say the book's title or author. In a weird accident, Alexa ordered it? Just giving ideas...
Maybe Amazon themselves made the accident. Maybe someone else ordered this book and somehow, Amazon's computer system accidently put your address on the order?
If this happens again, maybe you need to make a police report if you can't get this resolved with Amazon. Just go to the police station and ask to make a police report of this strange incident. If anything else happens, you'll have a record. THIS would be a last resort.
As far as Amazon, usually, there is an invoice within the order. It will have an order number on it. That will tell Amazon who ordered it, what time, what credit card was charged, etc...
Not trying to scare you or anything like that. Just trying to help. Anyone else have ideas?
@reviewer from sc A couple of corrections. Alexa does not eavesdrop and order merchandise you mention.
Also Amazon does not include invoices in merchandise. I've never received one. You must not be an Amazon shopper or you'd know this. It has often been mentioned here on the boards too.
A police report is useless as its not a crime to send someone a gift unsolicited. QVC just sent some customers free cookies. Should i have made a report? Just let Amazon know about it. It's their responsibility.

@justashopper Did you read the detailed description of the scam? Its a scheme to get favorable reviews on Amazon.

I have received invoices with my Amazon orders. It's not with EVERY order, but I have received just a small piece of paper with my order number and the item that I ordered. I don't know if you all are thinking of a return form. No, with Amazon, I don't ever receive a return order form like with QVC or HSN.
As for the police report, I'm not saying that she should have the police investigate anything. A police report is just an official record of an incident. That's all. I said that she should do this if it happens again because this could be a stalker. If she ever went to court for a restraining order or anything like that, an official record of previous incidents would help her case.
More than likely, I agree with others that this is probably just a surprise gift. If she finds that a friend sent this as a surprise, or if Amazon says that they made a mistake, then that's good. That's why I said that the police report is only a last resort. I was just trying to help. No worries.

@cuddlesmama wrote:Yesterday, I received a package in the mail from Amazon. I haven't ordered anything from amazon in 6 months. It was so weired. a note from amazon and it said A gift for you and my name like I bought myself this gift. It was a small paperback book for $4.95. I looked into my account and there was nothing there. I then called my CC company and they said there is nothing there with that date or that price and it was bought on December 17th.
I went to Amazon and there is no one to call and actually talk to someone.
I have talked to Customer Service many times over the years. They are easy to reach, and the best CS reps I have dealt with, and that is many. Might call their toll free number if you are that concerned!
hckynut 🇺🇸
And when I looked into returns I can't even return it as there is no such item to get a return form to send it back. This is weird and scary. That someone send me this book said that I ordered it and there is no info about it anywhere. Any suggestions on what or who I should call next? Thanks

This is called a brushing scam. It's done by scammers so they can use actual orders they send to you in your name but they pay for. Then the scammers use your name to write reviews for the product using your name.
@cuddlesmama @I read about this or else heard about this on a podcast. This is a type of scam. Groups of scammers send things to people for free. I found it. Here is how the scam works. It's explained here. One example that is used is a free Nespresso machine.
The article explains how the freebies help the scammers. This was on the National Pubic Radio (NPR) highly respected podcast about finance called Planet Money.
@cuddlesmama This is also called a brushing scam. THIS IS THE SCAM YOURE MOST LIKELY EXPERIENCING FROM YOUR DESCRIPTION. Here's what Amazon says about it and how to handle this. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwiWy9Xv8Y38AhVTnWoFHYmLBgUQ...

So far NO one has demanded payment from her! Not the same situation.
I know that, but OP did express concern about possibly being billed for it. She only received it yesterday, and someone could come along and try to ask for payment in the future. If she's asked for payment or not, she can still keep the book without paying.
