Has Anyone Had Their Cat or Dog Had Acupuncture?

I recently adopted a 5 year old cat (Katie). Ever since she came to live with me, she's limped on one foot.

I contacted the lady who took care of her before I adopted her. She told me that when she got Katie she limped.

I adopted Katie and her brother (Billy) at the same time. They both had extensive folders (only two adopted parents) so they've been well cared for.

No one has any idea on what could have happened to Katie's foot but only that she's always been like that.

As soon as I adopted her I had my Vet check her out. He said nothing shows up on X-rays and it is probably just arthritis.

I give her every day in her food Crondrotin (sp) that the Vet sells (by prescription/capsule). I open the capsule and sprinkle on her morning wet food. She eats it.

Has anyone taken their animal(s) to acupuncture? Please tell me what any of you knows about it, pros and cons.

I just want to help her. The Vet said there is nothing that can be done. I love her so much and hate to see her limping.

I haven't done acupuncture for my pets (just for me) but perhaps you could also add a heated pet bed for her, which will help with the stiffness if it's arthritis. There are ones that plug in and others that use the pet's body heat to activate the heat core inside.

Yes, our cat had acupuncture for arthritis a few years ago -- it worked well. And as the other poster remarked, a heated bed helps a lot. Also, there aren't many pain medications that cats can take, but your vet could prescribe one that's safe for her; I'm shocked that he says there is nothing he can do.

Yes. I tried acupuncture for kidney disease on my precious black Persian kitty Abu. I believe it slowed the progress of the disease and had the added benefit of easing his arthritis pain. I am blessed to have a vet who uses traditional and holistic medicine. I had a beautiful grey Persian years ago who adopted me. He was young (they estimated about 3) when he found us and always limped. Doctor could never find out why but speculated that since he had been de-clawed something must have gone wrong with that operation. We were blessed to have Smokey another 16 years. The limp never went away but it also never got worse or stopped him from doing anything he wanted. Good luck with your Katie!
