Has Anyone Ever Suffered Frostbite?

Thought this would be a good topic...especially as a reminder for those of us experiencing this Arctic weather to bundle up when you go out in this weather. Wear the hat, gloves, scarf, boots, several layers, and a heavy coat. You never know when your car might break down. Also, put an emergency kit in your car...warm blanket, energy food, etc.

I did experience frostbite when I was in high school. Like a typical high school kid, I wore a coat to school, but no hat, gloves, or boots. Somehow I missed my ride home, so rather than call my dad...I walked home in 14 below zero weather with a neighborhood boy. It was only 1 mile.

I experienced frostbite on my ears, knees, and the sides of my hands. They were all blistered, and it took about 3 weeks to recover. Not fun...and can be very dangerous...so please bundle up! And...don't forget that you can have a heart attack shoveling snow.

That's excellent advise for all winter not just the cold snap!

My second year here I got caught in a break down with only a vest and sweater. I never want that to happen again.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Suffered Frostbite?

We stocked up on groceries the last couple days, so we are just hunkering down now until it warms up a little. Good time to get some household projects done or catch up on reading.

Yes, on my feet, when I was a child. One of the neighborhood mothers took a group of us kids out sledding. I got snow in my boots, but I was too shy to complain. I remember having to go to the hospital....and that it was excruciatingly painful. I recovered....but I have never enjoyed playing in the snow since that day.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Suffered Frostbite?

I had a spot of frostbite on my toe once.

It was a white spot and I didn't know what it was. Went to the doctor and he knew right away.

He looked at the shoes I was wearing and lectured me about wearing warmer footwear in winter.

Yes....I remember reading a post once before where you mentioned how shy you were as a child and that you had frostbite. I guess it stuck with me because I was a very shy child too. I guess that would kind of destroy your urge to plan in the snow. There is nothing like snow down your boots or down your back!

Frostbite is no fun. I didn't go to the ER that night. I went to the doctor the next day with big blisters and peeling skin. There are different degrees of frostbite, just like burns.

When I go out in this kind of weather now, I am covered from head to toe with at least three layers...maybe four depending on how long I will be out.

It looks like we're in this for at least 5 days. I hope everyone stays safe.

Yes, that's how we learn. Good footwear is so essential in this kind of weather. I don't dress for beauty when it is this cold. I have some special Icelandic merino wool knee socks that I wear with ugly totally waterproof L.L. Bean boots with the boot liners that can go in or out.

Never had frostbite. I am inside for almost a week now due to bad weather (and I might add Im starting to climb the walls..lol) Today freezing rain, accidents everywhere. Last week it ws snow, snow, and more snow and minus zero temps. And this isn't Alaska, this is PA! I HOPE we can get out tomorrow to restock some perishable groceries!

Yes, the backs of my ankles (Achilles heels). When I was in elementary school. I'm always advising moms to make sure their children are wearing appropriate thick winter socks, even when it's not actually snowing. Any type of very cold climate(s) can produce frostbite, as my mom found out years ago.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
