Spoiler
Atticus is a racist, and Jem dies. I don't know why she had to do that to a beloved literary figure. It might be OK, but I'm not going to read it
Wow, I am really sorry you didn't cover the your spoiler.

hi cherry, I read about this book too - this is actually the rejected manuscript, I believe and it isn't really new - she wrote this back in the 1950's. When it was rejected, she wrote TKAM as we know it now
That is my understanding - I could be wrong. I also have no interest in reading this.

I figure that since it was rejected and she wrote a totally different character profile for Atticus, this was just a draft that was never meant to be. I am a bit surprised it is being published now.

Please put spoiler alert in the title or delete the spoiler.. I am so disappointed I read it now.. One of our local news channels did the same thing last night.. they forewarned but I had no idea. Basically that will ruin reading the book, maybe I'll cancel my pre-order...

This is actually Lee's first book, and the book contains three childhood flashbacks. The publisher told her to go back and expand upon the story int he flashbacks. These expansions became TKAB.
It was assumed this manuscript was long lost, but it was found a few years ago and is now being released. This book and TKAB can each stand on their own, but this book does give a glimpse into 1950s race issues which remain an issue even now.
