Today in my neck of the woods in PA it is Fasnacht Day.

So I am wishing everyone a Happy Fasnacht Day!

If you don't know what fasnachts are feel free to do a Google search. (But I can tell you they are a baked good made out of mashed potatoes, among other things, and are deep fried).

Fasnacht Day is always the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. (The last day to go overboard eating fat before fasting for Lent). Some may also call this day Fat Tuesday.

Most people dip them in table syrup (as in the thick turkey brand syrup, not your usual pancake syrup).

However, we roll ours in granulated or powdered sugar! (Yum!)

(Of course I wouldn't recommend eating them every day, as they are full of fat and calories..lol).

But for today we enjoy our fasnachts!

Today is Shrove Tuesday. Also known as Pancake Day. I'm English, so we're having pancakes today. These pancakes are more like crepes, and we eat them with lemon and sugar on them...yummmm.

Did y'all know that the pancake tradition stems from a pagan ritual - the pancake was thought to drive out winter and help spring arrive. The early Slavs would place a pancake in the window along with serving them.

Interesting how modern activities evolve from ancient ones.

Enjoy whatever your neck of the woods uses today.

Thank you for posting this, Shorty2U.

As I wrote here last year, we called them "kinklings" where I grew up (Frederick, Md.). I like to remember this time. Our next door neighbor made the best ones, and she always gave us a dozen.

We call today "Fat Tuesday" or Pazcki (poonchky) day! Filled VERY fattening type of pastry. Polish tradition was filled with a prune filling. Now, todays society has made them into "donuts" and fill them with anything. You are truly insulting the Polish by calling them a donut.

Paczki day is huge in the Chicagoland area. You must pre-order them from a bakery.

I picked up a few Fasnachts today. The bakery I went to had several varieties: plain, glazed, sprinkled sugar, cinnamon, and powdered sugar ones. I got home from work really late so I just got done eating one for desert. Ahhh, nothing like a nice hot cup of coffee to go along with my Fasnacht. I wanted to pick up a King Cake but they had none available...just pre-orders. One year though I ordered a King Cake straight from a New Orleans bakery for my mom as a gift. It was all decorated in the bright green, gold and purple icing. They even sent the traditional Mardi Gras beads with it.

Thank you and I love reading your traditions.

I never heard the word kinklings and I don't know what a King cake is.

I do know of the pancake day and Fat Tuesday.

PS) I love crepes! :-) which I just had 3 years ago for the first time!
