Hamburger in your area question?

Do any of you notice when you buy hamburger at the grocery store lately, that it is not shredded fine anymore?

Every grocery store I go to they have it shredded to look like strings, or as I like to say like worms and it turns me. (To which my husband says I'm over reacting..lol).

Plus its not too great if making meatballs if its stringy and I actually try to chop it apart better myself! lol.

To add this is not the cheap hamburger. I buy the 90% and up stuff NOT the 75% or 80% hamburger.

Now we don't eat a lot of meat anymore. But sometimes yes I will make meatballs, or hamburgers.

I hate to be a pain of a customer (Having used to work in a major grocery store!), but I am soon going to ask them to shred it like they did a year ago into tiny fine hamburger.

So I was wondering if anyone else notices this?

I grind my own meat. That way, I know exactly what I'm getting and can grind it as coarse or fine as I want it to be.

Re: Hamburger in your area question?

I am in southern WV, and have indeed noticed this same thing. My local grocery store does the loose grind on their ground beef, and a finer / shredded grind on ground chuck and ground round. Wal-Mart also does the loose grind on all of their hamburger.

I should grind my own . . .but I don't . .. I've been buying the three pack of the organic grass fed hamburger meat from Costco.

I finally tried the buffalo/bison meat the other night. It was ok. But I think I need a fancier hamburger or recipe to use it with . . . like a patty made with stuff in the middle or something. It was a little on the dry side and I was careful not to overcook too.

Funny. I HAVE noticed this. Doesn't bother me, though. I just think there is some new type of grinder someone developed that is either more efficient or more economical for the store.

Just like the pink slime they added. I'm not that naive when it comes to food and stores cutting costs. Buyer beware.

Whole Foods has frozen, pre-formed buffalo burger patties that are pretty good. We grilled them and topped them with swiss cheese and mushrooms that had been sauteed in butter, garlic and soy sauce.

Re: Hamburger in your area question?

if you dont like the grind then ask them to put it through again......or take a piece of meat, like a chuck roast, and have them grind it in the store for you fresh.

no, it doesnt bother me. my main concern is that it is fresh and red.
