Half-Staff Flags: Sunday only (10/8)

Fire Prevention Week is October 8-14.
On Sunday, October 8, there will be a
National Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service.

To honor those who have sacrificed their
own lives to save the lives of others,
a President's Proclamation has been issued to
lower all American flags to Half-Staff 10/8 (Sun) only.

"I call on all Americans to participate in this observance with
appropriate programs and activities and by renewing their
efforts to prevent fires and their tragic consequences.”

The flag was at half-staff through yesterday to respect Las Vegas victims.  It seems it spends a lot of time at half-staff.

I've noticed many flags have been at half-staff since the Las Vegas tragedy.

@Margo Channing

@ValuSkr

It’s not odd, at all.

In fact, the trend is much, much lower this year.

(2016 yielded several political deaths, Dallas, Nice-France, Brussels, Orlando)

There are 5 scheduled flag lowerings every year:

  • May 15:  Peace Officers Recognition Week
  • May 29:  Memorial Day
  • Sept 11: Patriot Day
  • Oct 8:     Fallen Firefighter Week
  • Dec 7:     Pearl Harbor

Additional lowerings for 2017, to date:

  • April 6:   John Glenn Memorial
  • Oct 2-6:  Las Vegas Tragedy Memorial

@Margo Channing  Not sure what you mean but the flags were ordered at half staff more times than any other administration during the last 8 years.

It doesn't matter; it's the respect for the deceased that counts.

Also included in the counts are the days when the flag is normally lowered to half staff for certain annual dates.

No,since we started lowering it too much many years ago  I know this will take a lot of heat, but to me it has gone past honoring the dead to calling attention to the monsters who do these things.  There are many ways of honoring the dead.

I agree, but the flag is lowered for other reasons than mass shootings.

Weather catastrophes & having the US show empathy for other countries are a couple of reasons why we lower many times in recent decades.

Oklahoma City Bombing was one of the first times we lowered the flag

for a large scale catastrophe w/ private citizens...but it was a

governmental location.

9/11 flag lowering set the precedent for a large scale catastrophe

without being a government building and/or governmental employees.

2005 Indian Ocean earthquake & tsunamis was the first time we lowered

for a weather & other country catastrophe.  Hurricane Katrina, of course, occurred later in 2005.

I wish they would only lower for the death of a President only,

sitting or former. Only the President for, of course, the mandated

30-day period for that position. I feel the flag should be held high

all the time, no matter what chaos is occurring underneath it.
