Half-Staff Flags: 9/11 (Sun) only

To honor & remember the victims of September 11, 2001,
a President's Proclamation has been issued to
lower all American flags to Half-Staff from sunrise to sunset 9/11 (Sun).

Additionally, a moment of silence is observed to correspond

with the attacks, beginning at 8:46 AM (EDT),

the time the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11,

struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center

on September 11, 2001.

@lavinia5534

You're welcome, dear.

Sadly Flag Etiquette is missing.

Most people don't know when to lower

and more importantly, raise back to full staff.

I'm stunned when I see businesses with lowered flags

weeks after when they should've been raised to full-staff.

And yes, they will hear from me!  Smiley Happy 🇺🇸

@sidsmom  Also the flag is always lowered, not raised, to half staff. If one is putting up the flag it should be raised to full staff and then lowered.

Thank you for a wonderful reminder.

Re: Half-Staff Flags: 9/11 (Sun) only

I would like to hang our flag tomorrow but it doesn't go half staff.  It just fits into a bracket that's on the front of the house.  Is that permissable @sidsmom ?

I would think that it is.

Workaround suggestions include....attaching an extender of some type to give the illusion of half-staff to the permanent flags.  Another method is to attach a length of black ribbon to the top of the flag where is can drape down with the flag.

That's lovely you have permanent American Flag attached to your home!

I like your idea about draping black ribbon.  Thank you.

You misunderstood @sidsmom, we do not keep our flag outside permanently.  It comes back into the house when it is appropriate to take it down.

Re: Half-Staff Flags: 9/11 (Sun) only

@truffle@sidsmom  The flag can be put out tomorrow. Flags attached to the house on a staff are exempt. So are any indoor flags.

However, for futurer reference sidsmom is right - there are black streamers available for those who display a flag on a staff on their front porch or over the garage, etc.
