Usually at funerals you have the people you are friends with give eulogies. That's all..nothing sinister.

"The White House has returned its flag to half-staff to honor the late Sen. John McCain after receiving widespread criticism for breaking with precedent and raising it to full-staff this morning. Earlier, the GOP and Dem Senate leaders issued a joint request to the Defense Dept. that all flags under their purview be kept at half-staff until McCain’s burial."
@sunshine45 what was this quoted from. i ask because the US Code states what is usually done which what was done. the decision can be made to extend days or whatever. so what precedent is your source quoting? pls share.
i did mention earlier what the us code said.
however, i believe THIS quote that i posted is taking into account the last few members of congress AND the last first lady and how long the flag was flown at half staff after their deaths. it was a news site and i apologize that i did not mention which one.
the "precedent" is really NOT following the code.
precedent:
an earlier event or action that is regarded as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances.

@sunshine45 thanks - you don't remember your source?
when i think of precedent i definitely think of kind of a standard adhered to more or less - not what has preceded. mine is kind of lawyer talk, though. the word is a bit misleading, eh?
when i read about previous members of Congress being honored, there was a varying number of days. quite often their home state would lower flags for a longer period of time.
what jumped out at me was that the last member of Congress to be honored by lying in state was Daniel Inouye.(sp?)
all very interesting.

@ms traditional I read about the precedent being that the flag fly at half staff until after the funeral on CBS's website.
