A couple of days ago I returned a pair of shoes via UPS to HSN.  Today, I get an email from HSN acknowledging that the return has been processed and on its way to them.

BUT once they receive it I will have to wait 3-5 days for my refund to be processed!!

If they know the item is on its way back, why not a refund immediately?  Not my problem if the item is delayed or lost.

One of the reasons I seldom return anything and keep my purchases under $30 so I just donate if I don't like, doesn't fit.  The shoes, however, were too expensive to just donate.

I expect that eventually I'll get my refund but just don't agree with the process.

If I were a business, I would do the exact same thing they are doing. Think about it, what if the item returned is damaged and unsellable? Worse, what if someone sends back a pkg. with nothing in it? Then it's a real hassle on their end to get their money back if they already refunded the buyer. Some companies like Amazon refund it right away, but I bet they have alot of loss doing this. They are so big they can afford to, but most businesses are not that fortunate. Not to mention, these kind of loses, which are considered theft in any way you look at it, costs all of us in the end.

I had an eBay purchase that never arrived.  It was 20 days.   eBay refunded me immediately.  On about day 33 doesn't it show up.  I contacted eBay to try to repay.  It was a US purchase not from another country.  They said contact the seller.  The seller left eBay.  I felt bad, I assumed eBay was out the money since the original seller gets the payment.

I understand them wanting to wait for the hsn return.  I hear of people receiving empty bags, etc.   Our post office branch now even has flyers on their outside mailboxes, to bring payments with checks to mail inside due to high theft and check washing.

Depends on the condition it's in when they receive it.

I don't think HSN is unreasonable.  Return of online purchases is very different from local brick/mortar stores.

Well, I guess I'm from the old school of "the customer is always right."  And it bothers me that companies are quick enough to charge but very slow giving refunds.

@kaydee50 - In the old days, there was very little online shopping.  Most people bought from B&M stores and returned any items there.  So the refund, assuming the item was in good condtion, was immediate.
