This is a must read article. “Where the FDA’s drug approval process is founded on testing and more testing, the regulatory system for generics is built on trust, specifically trust in manufacturers.”

The FDA sadly lacks the budget and manpower to oversee drug manufacturing overseas in countries like China and India where most generics are now made. They don't even have a big enough budget to test questionable drugs that are brought to the agency's attention. I've heard that they have a backlog of hundreds of thousands of pharmaceuticals that are waiting to be tested. The backlog includes drugs dispensed by veterinarians. Even our pets' drug supply is not safe or reliable. And obviously drug companies don't care enouth to bother to test the drugs they have manufactured abroad and sell in the U.S. market.

I have long ago lost trust in FDA . Way too many drugs turning out harmful, tainted, etc. That’s in addition to price issues. Has honesty lost its place in business?
In this case, it’s because of the practice of assuming all generics are equivalent to name brand drugs and not requiring testing and proof of testing for each one of them. The FDA would be much better if it would do this but it would require a much bigger staff and some changes up in their protocols and in regulations from government. Big Pharma has many lobbyists fighting for thenpm too.

Very true about the FDA. We need to be manufacturing lifesaving essential medication on our soil. With all the tensions between nations, it’s very unwise to put ourselves in such a vulnerable position. US owned Pharma companies would return to manufacturing here if it was financially worth their while to do so. In light of the risks, we need to spend whatever it costs to get these companies to manufacture over here.

@Mindy D. Lobbyists? Doesn't everyone? You could say this about anything in Washington.

Yes, of course. I’m just adding in lobbyists because it is just another difficulty that could be encountered.
