I was a red headed kid but morphed into a brown haired girl with red highlights. Thank to the magic of hair color, I have been auburn for many years now. Because of my skin and eye color everyone thinks it's my real color.
Regarding nationality; I am from an Italian American family with many natural redheads in it. Almost all of us are light skinned and light eyed. It really isn't all that unusual.

I remember reading about a child being asked, "Where did you get that red hair?"
The child replied, "It came with my head!" ![]()

@Oznell. There also seems to be a "hot spot" of Hispanics in Mexico and elsewhere with bright mahogany hair. I first noticed it when a gang of Hispanic teens got in trouble and I saw them on TV in court, all with Hispanic surnames. One stood out with very red hair. I've later seen this in other Hispanic families, one child with red hair.

I'm German Irish but no redheads in the family. We have the fair skin and light eyes associated with redheads, but that's it. Interestingly, my DIL who is 100% Irish, has dark brown hair, brown eyes, and medium skin.
Growing up, my best friend had beautiful wavy auburn hair. She was Greek on her dad's side and German on her mom's side, but took after her mom for her coloring 100%.

My Mom, my Aunt and my Grandma all had red hair. My mom gave birth to a boy and a girl before I was born and they both had red hair. Neither survived past 2 days. My brother and I were born with brown and blonde hair. My mom always wished that I would have a daughter with red hair. I always told her if I did I would give her up for adoption. I remember when I had her my husband said, Sandy, I think she has red hair. We think my 1 year old grandson has red hair but we will have to wait to see him in sunlight. It is rampant in my family. Forgot my Aunt had a red headed son. I never did give my daughter up. My mom wished a lot of stuff on me that was the only one that came true.

I also have the fair skin and freckles, as well as extremely sensitive eyes to bright light, so I do not do well outside in full sun without dark sunglasses. I am not an outdoor person!
At 69, I do color my hair to cover the wispy white hairs around my temples. It takes about 8 weeks for me to show white hair in the crown of my head. My hair still accepts color well and my stylist friend of 20 years says it would take a LONG time for my hair to turn completely white.
I hated my red hair as a child, but embrace it now.

Italian descent maternal and paternal......many curly redheads on mother's side. My hair is naturally auburn and wavy.....sometimes I like to help it along.....i.e., highlight the red lol.

My Father was from Ireland. His Grandfather, my Great-Grandfather, had the Irish flaming red hair. No one in the family has turned up with red hair, however, some of us have a lot of red in our hair - me and my DD definitely do. Every time one of my nieces had a baby, I was always ready for one of the kids to turn up with red hair but none have. Still might happen though!
An interesting side note. Once at the dentist office, I was having to be numbed for a procedure and my Dentist had to give me an extra dose. He said to me that he has found that people with red hair often need more novacaine. Told him about my Great-Grandfather and that while my hair is now gray, when I was younger, I did have red in my hair and you could see it in certain light. He said that's probably why I needed a bit more novacaine. Thought that was a interesting observation on his part.

Trouble with redheads they really have to look out for skin cancer.
Yes, this is true-as a natural red head I went through malignant melanoma at 27....I now make sure my red headed daughter gets checked every year.
