Whether they'd been accepted at Harvard or Timbuktu U, seventeen year olds are still seventeen year olds and they, at least occasionally, still say and do stupid things, as do those far older and more experienced... Like most of us, they also sometimes say things they don't actually mean.
Some of the rigid mindsets around here that would expect perfection at all times and at all costs are just out there... I also heartily disagree that comments left on a FB page are the result of bad parenting... This item makes me so glad of two things, first that I don't 'do' FB and second that I never aspired to attend Harvard...
Had Harvard rescinded their admissions over something they did rather than something they said, that, for me, would be different. I only hope these kids had a backup plan that included attendance at a school a little less full of itself... or full of something, anyway...

Good. Maybe a hard lesson for them to learn- can't use social media to spout off things that you shouldn't. So many people- young AND old need to learn this lesson. Just because you CAN say virtually whatever you want, doesn't mean you should.
And at their age, they should know better. I knew by age 6 what was acceptable to say and what wasn't, probably earlier but this is when I remember having talks with my parents about talking about other people, etc. If you don't know by age 17 that your words (and these days, your posts, tweats, etc) can come back to haunt you, that is pretty sad.

What they posted was disgusting. I don't feel bad for them. They are lucky they are not being individually named, which could ruin their lives.

You think the school is "full of itself"? Really?
Based on your comments, it sounds like you don't know the specifics here ..... jokes mocking sexual assault, the Holocaust, racial slurs and the deaths of children goes WAY beyond "saying stupid things". How can you say these are "acceptable" stupid comments?
Since it's pretty common knowledge that both schools and employers check facebook accounts, why is anyone surprised?
I can only imagine how mortified their parents are ..... or, hopefully, should be!

There's a difference between being book smart and really smart...lol Apparently those losers don't read newspapers because a similar thing happened to prospective Harvard students last year. They got caught posting some racist ******, they were called out on it but they were still accepted.

When my daughter was applying for SSDI, her lawyer told her the judge will be checking her FB. It is a tool used today to learn about a person.
Yeah, they are looking for those skiing and mountain biking pictures for people who claim that they are disabled. Of course, most people have more than one FB page to protect ourselves from that type of thing. Even I have a "junk" FB page and real one for my real life.

Many people have a private FB page and unless they are required to reveal it, many can't be checked. I don't know how/why a potential employer would disregard your application. I think they might be thrilled you aren't on social media.
I have a relative who is very high up in a company and he doesn't have, never has had and never will have a social media page. He is very vocal about photographs not ever being put on FB of him. But he said they do check a potential employee's FB page if they have one.

I don't agree with this as a blanket statement. We all know people who have 'done everything right' in raising their kids, but SOME young people always have and always will push the envelope, stretch the boundaries. It's what they do, it's how they learn. Now comes the part where they are held responsible for their words/actions, and consequences fall into place.
Hopefully they learned something from this, and don't continue to make the same mistakes.

Good for Harvard.
Kids are not always the reflection of their parents. There will always be good parents and bad kids and bad parents and good kids.
