HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO A HERO IRISHMAN

How I love these guys, the few we have left.  Am so glad they are celebrated, on social media, and elsewhere.  Spotted this little birthday salute to him on X:

105 years old today, and accomplished so much-- stopping Hitler-- while still a young upstart, a mere 'broth of a boy'.   So many of them did.

What a handsome flyboy in his uniform.  When you look at his current picture, he's still got that dashing smile.

Happy birthday, Mr. Hemingway!

Re: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO A HERO IRISHMAN

Thank you, @Oznell, for this thread that salutes one of the very brave young men from the Battle of Britain. Such a fascinating time in history. The RAF had men from many counties among their ranks, Australians, Canadians, Americans pretending to be Canadians since the US had not yet entered the war, and men from German occupatied countries.

These were the men that Churchill was famously referring to when he said, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few". It's believed their bravery and sacrifice during the Battle of Britain forestalled the planned German invasion of the UK.

We should never forget history...

Re: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO A HERO IRISHMAN

Love your giving us fascinating historical context for what he and countless others did, @Etoile308 .

I have a hazy recollection ( which could be wrong), that even legendary American novelist William Faulkner was one of those who enlisted with the RAF, so that he could get into the fight early.  What a generation.

I can hear Churchill's so-true, bracing words that you reference, ringing in my head!

We need more heroes like that.  The Greatest Generation indeed.

Thank you @Oznell for sharing this.
