Maggie, in all fairness, though he caused his own death, three men were questioned aggressively for days based on his bogus information.  We still also don't know how much he had embezzled from the Police's charity benefit designed for children.  His destruction cut a wide path imo and there is talk that his entire record is now being combed with a fine tooth comb.

The Sheiff's dept and FBI are looking into another person's involvement.

There is a lot of speculation that the wife may have been involved in the embezzlement.  A charity which gave have the family 15k, has asked for it back.

Yes....His wife and son are now both under investigation.  For such a small amount of money to cause this much hurt, pain etc.  is horrible.

The FBI was called in from day one!  They have been on it all along...either they don't move very fast or some cover up junk was going on.  FL Police Dept. has quite a reputation for being corrupt...I know, I lived there, it is nothing new, it has been that way for many years.

This whole situation is sad and disgusting....to think that three innocent men could be sitting in prison just baffles me.  I am afraid GI Joe was no hero.

I would think that the spouse at least would be investigated as well.  He may have just been the tip of the iceberg.

If the authorities are keeping things mum, maybe it's because more folks are being investigated and they don't need them knowing.

Maybe this incident will help clean things up so that they eliminate the bad guys on the force.

@Mz iMac You are welcome. The first thing that clicked with me that something wasn't quite right was why would a single officer pursue three suspects on his own and at first refuse backup when it was offered. As a 30-year veteran, he should have known better. That seemed like something a young "hotshot" trying to make a name for himself would do.

That is exactly the same thing that I thought. After that long on the force, he should have known the proper procedure to follow in the situation.

Re: Guess he was a Fraud

I get that he had reached the end of his rope and was desperate. I don't understand why suicide was preferrable to fessing up and doing time. And for sure, I can't fathom why the elaborate hoax surrounding his death, unless he thought he would actually go out as a hero in the eyes of others. He must have had some huge kind of life insurance policy. I mean, why not just commit suicide and leave other fake perpetrators out of it??? It was just one more act of cowardice.

Just read a story from the AP that his phone records indicate that he tried to arrange for a gang member to kill a village administrator who might discover his embezzlement.
