@HB glamma wrote:House cat, did you search pockets and all inside purse and wallet?? I assume you have. I just know that I myself frequently stick the cash in any odd place then I cannot find it until I do an all out search.
Yes, please check the bags that held your groceries. It would have been like me to absent-mindedly throw the cash in the bag with the receipt.
Also, I agree with the many good comments here. I would check with Customer Service - it certainly doesn't hurt and you're not accusing them of anything after all. Also, they may be able to review the video and confirm you weren't handed any cash. My niece recovered some items this way from a mall store - she'd paid for the items but they weren't in her bag when she got home, so she asked the store to review the video.

There will be records for any shortages/overages at the end of each closing day, on each register. When I was a cashier, we were witten up if it was over/short, around $6. So go to the manager.

For that amount of cash back, and that you left the store before realizing you did not have the cash.... the store will most likely tally the tills and see if they find the overage in that checkers till on his shift that day. Usually they are NOT THAT MUCH OVER OR SHORT. They should be able to find the mistake.
Some stores for a good customer may just pay you the amount just on your word. If it was just a few dollars( $2- or so) where we worked we would just pay the customer... but say for $40,00, we would see how the tills came out at the end of the stores day.
I imagine these days since everything is on camera... they probably have cameras above each checker and they can zero in on your transaction that day and see if you were handed the money or not in a close up of the transaction.

I think this is something that should have been done immediately after discovery.

Had something similar happen this summer at lunchtime at a nearby McDonald's. The cashier was a young girl who was kibitzing with a young fellow in the cooking area. Since I was stressing that the burger be totally plain while she began getting my change for a twenty, I got distracted as another customer pushed up to the counter. I moved over to wait for my order.
When I got to my table and started to put the receipt in my purse, I realized that I had not received the $12 change. Went to the counter and advised the manager that there was a problem in that I had not received my change. He excused himself to go to the back office. When he came to the counter he apologized and said yes there was $12 difference in the drawer. He gave me my change.
It is very important to check your receipt for the right charges before you leave the store ( takes time and getting used to but the number of times DH or myself have found problems makes it worthwhile ). Too, as you are finding out, it is important to check your change. Don't worry about the folks in line behind you: they would probably do the same thing. You can turn and apologize for the delay. Stand your ground.

UPDATE: I went to the store early this morning. I spoke first to my favorite cashier, who knows me very well. She asked who the checker was that day and when I told her she said, "He was probably talking too much." I didn't ask her to elaborate, but that confirmed my theory that he was distracted.
I told the manager that I had the receipt but not the cash, that is was possible I lost it, but didn't think so, could he check the #s for that day, but he didn't bother. He said he knew I was a good customer (I'm there literally every day and I shop for two households) and a trustable person and he had me sign a paper and gave me the $40.
Lesson learned: Pay attention!

Yay!! So glad it worked out!
I think I'd avoid that cashier in the future. There's one at my grocery store who I avoid too.

Well considering how blase you were about $ your lucky. I would of noticed that day. But I don't take not receiving cash back as no big deal. Must be nice to live like that.
I would of noticed at the register. Why you did not call the store asap as soon as you realized your mistake is beyond me. And yes it is your mistake. It is your money and you left the store without it. The cashier was doing his job and you left his line without receiving your requested money. Then you blew it off for over a week and put all the blame on him. Even after realizing you still were very nonchalant about it.
I work hard for my money and can account for all of it spent, deposited and cash. I would think 40. is still worth something today no matter what your life style is. I have a sister in law who forgot to cash a check for $45,000. Just let it go until it was almost a year later I can not believe that people can just think so little about $.
