Re: Grammar -- I rest my case

On these threads I keep reading people who say " I seen......". That drives me up a wall !!

Also a LARGE portion of posters who evidentally don't know the difference in using the words "then" and "than" because they use the word "then" for "than". It boggles my mind, I wonder if they went to school in America ??????

Re: Grammar -- I rest my case

Not even a real teacher is perfect in everything - especially grammar!! In day to day talking no one always uses perfect correctness due to regional sayings, etc. I agree that the meth lab was far more to be concerned about than grammar!!

Anyone home schooling should be held to the same standards that public schools and other schools have to adhere to insure a good education!! Some of the stories I have read about what some home schoolers consider a curriculum is bizarre!! I really don't think most parents are capable/qualified to be the one that home schools their children either especially in the higher grades with so many subjects!!

We have a lot of children who live at our campground. A few go to school but mostly they are home schooled. Mostly they are the kids of the gas wells and pipeline workers. All you have to do is have a conversation with them to realize they are being poorly educated. One kid at the pool this summer was telling me that he was getting behind for his age so now his Mom takes his online tests for him so he can advance.

OMG! This is sad but probably happening a lot AND these are the children that might one day be running our country with their Moms looking up on the internet what to do.

There have been cheating scandals orchestrated by principals and teachers. They were changing results on tests. This happens all over the country. Children who may one day run the country are being taught by these unethical teachers. That isn't any better.

You are sooooo right! And what about the unethical students looking up answers to test's on the internet while in class? How are they learning anything?

They're probably not learning anything. If a teacher isn't aware that his/her students are using phones, tablets, or other devices to look up answers during tests in his/her class, then I can't imagine that person is a very good or efficient teacher.

I've heard public school teachers say far worse.

Re: Grammar -- I rest my case

I think grammar is pretty much a lost cause at this point. I've never heard anyone say he seen or he come growing up. Now I hear it all the time and no one thinks a thing of it, much less correct the person saying it. I always wonder how kids can go to school and come out speaking like that. Do they speak one way in school and another way at home? How can they not be corrected in school? I don't get it.

Just another example of the decline of our society.

So why worry - you can't change it.

Re: Grammar -- I rest my case

Unfortunately, I've heard too many people saying, "I should have went." They should not be home schooling their children. I also hear "for you and I. " Would they also say, "for I?" The word should be "me." There's a difference between the subject of a sentence and the object of a preposition. Finally, the word data is plural. Datum is the singular, but nobody uses that word. People can say we should not be fussy but I disagree. It's not asking too much for people to master their native language.

I have my issues with home schooling but I don't have a problem with the woman using less than perfect grammar in a setting that wasn't school related. She wasn't instructing her kids. And let's not pretend that teachers always use perfect grammar all the time. Because they certainly do not. I do think that education should be left to professional teachers. I can change a light bulb but that doesn't mean I can rewire my house.

I have to agree. People who know better will often make mistakes. Teachers are not always perfect. They are human!

Maybe this woman was a little nervous about being interviewed knowing that she might be on the local news. Maybe she's one of those people who get easily flustered under those circumstances.

I'm glad I never went into teaching. Not only was it not my calling but to be so scrutinized constatnly would make me a nervous wreck. I would feel that I had to be perfect all of the time and I'm certainly far from it!
