Good thoughts for retail workers and other holiday workers

Keep a good thought for for retail workers, wait staff, police, firefighters and everyone else who work during snowstorms and holidays. My dad was a firefighter and we never had Thanksgiving or Christmas on the day of.

Yes - for sure!   These folks that work in fire fighting, polic  or medical always have to make sure there is support for us. They are amazing and giving folks.    The restaurants and shops are usually open almost 24/7 365 -  I do wish they would close most places for holidays, everyone needs time for family.

Thanks, for thinking of us all who like your Father sacrificed many Holidays with their families to  provide care for others .  I am a Nurse as  are some of my other  close relatives. We  decided yrs ago to have our family holiday gathering on Christmas Eve  so most of us would  be off work .  I don't think we celebrated many Holidays  on the actual designated day along with all our birthdays.  Most of Nurses went to work  in the Holiday mood  and were cheerful to our patients even when we had to work mandatory hours due to snowstorms.

I drove through a snowstorm to open a store in a mall. Risked my life on the roads for a bit over minimum wage. And we had customers! People with cabin fever or tired of family. The topic everyone had when they came up to the register? Did you see that weather? LOL

Re: Good thoughts for retail workers and other holiday workers

@traveler  Decades ago I worked in a restaurant, every holiday, every weekend.

There were nights the weather was treacherous and no one should have been on the roads. I just hoped to get home in one piece.

Everyone who came in told me to be careful because it was a sheet of ice on the road.  I wanted to say, but didn't, "and yet you risked your life to come out for dinner, it's just food."

God bless those working this Thursday and over Christmas.

Of course it is part of the job, I however choose to acknowledge the sacrifice they make and send good thoughts. I was an RN for 40 years and know quite well about this topic.

Some people prefer to work and get the double time pay than do the obligatory family dinner.

And some who work the holiday schedule and get the double time pay also get to spend a Thanksgiving Day with people they love (even if it's on another day).  That's what I consider a win-win.

I try to be gracious to service workers at these busy times, even if I get so-so service. Many times they are doing double duty for those that called in sick, or chose not to go out in the bitter conditions. We stay at home during bad storms, but wind and cold are all too common and we do have to shop and eat.
