We went through this last year with my grandson heading for his freshman year.
I would highly recommend not loading them down with "stuff," including supplies or snacks. They just won't have the space to store things.
You can never go wrong with a gift card or putting cash into their student account.
My grandson and his friends love to go out and eat at different places around campus as they tire of school food fast. The gift cards can used for this or any number of things they may need or want.

@Mersha With college males......Snacks arn't stored. They're shared around the whole floor and/or traded off for a different snack. At most, snacks last a few days if that long.

The school provides them in the rooms. They're a combo unit that will turn the fridge down low/off when the microwave is in use.

A pair of noise canceling headphones. Dorm life is fun but it's also noisy. Gift cards to local eateries.
One of those little night reading lights that hang around your neck and have lights on both ends.

Students in university housing will get lists from the schools of what to bring and what not to bring. Rooms are generally small and space is precious--and they also will get a room mate perhaps and who knows what they will bring.
I'd hold off until they are settled and then ask the student and provide for them what they are missing.

Females are the same way. My one granddaughter can go through the tons of snacks I send her in no time. Her dorm room seems to be the local hangout. She has a lot of friends.

I've sent 2 girls off to college. Don't waste money trying to figure out what she may or may not need or want. Cash and gift cards are the best. I don't know any college kids who don't appreciate some spending money. And once she checks into her dorm room she will probably think of something that she needs.
