I'm trying to look this up, because I read it a month or two ago, and I don't remember all the details. I don't believe it was on a school owned device. I can't remember if the guy in the video posted it, or if someone randomly hacked into her computer and posted it.

A valid and authentic Facebook account must be connected to your GoFundMe campaign.
So you need a FB account? Well that leaves me out as I do not do FB. Would have been nice to set up a fund to help me pay for my new car I plan on getting in a few months. Had my eye on the Jaguar XJ. Now I have to revert to plan B - Ford.

I contributed to a Go Fund Me campaign once. It was set up to help the widow and young son of a policeman killed in the line of duty. I didn't know these people but felt compelled to donate. I did research it online. The news stories were from more than 1 source and matched the story given on the GFM site.

Sorry, I don't donate to any of these GFM accounts - IMO most of them are not legitimate - don't care what they tell you - if there's a way to get around things, there are people to get around them. Also, I'm not paying for your college tuition - you have parents let them pay. I'm not paying for your vacations - get a job. And, lastly the latest I saw - you used all your savings for IVF treatments and now have no money but want to adopt a child - Sorry, save your money and adopt your own child. Some of these things are just wrong.

I would never give money to someone for personal use via GoFundMe, Ever.
Call my cynical but I believe there is litle truth left out there on any social media sites. Craigslist started out okay, now turned into a place for stealing dogs and selling them (my kid has allergies to the new dog!), PETA, animal sites that request donations to pay for surgery for some unfortunate animal.....
I am always amazed when I hear a story on my local news about someone dying and the family sets up a fund to help pay for expenses. How in the world did people survive anything in the days before all these internet sites? Oh, I guess it was called planning and preparing for your own life.
I also remember reading that anyone who is a victim of a crime can get funds from the state to help pay for unexpected outcomes, So again, why need a GoFundMe account.
Crime victim compensation is a government program to reimburse victims of violent crimes- such as assault, homicide, rape, and, in some states, burglary - as well as their families for many of their out-of-pocket expenses. Every state has a crime victim compensation program. I have donated to a GFM account only once, and that was for a local business.

My son's teacher did a Kickstarter page to fund his childrens book. He had written the story and used the kids drawn pic's for the illistrations. It turned out awesome and all who donated got a copy of the book/ bookmark etc. The ones that didn't and wanted to buy the book could. It was very cool project.
I have know people to use GoFundMe for death expenses when a family member died without means. I think there are good reasons to use these websites and it's good that the option is out there.

we recently had two deputy sheriffs that were killed in the line of duty. it got very little national attention. their union set up a go fund me page to help out the families.
it has raised about 185000 in about a month.

The last time I donated to one of these go fund me things it was for the lady in Texas who got arrested for leaving her kid in the car during a job interview. While I thought leaving a kid in the car was horrendous, I sympathized with her because she was trying.
Fast forward months later she was ordered by a judge to put some of that money away for her kids education which she refused to do. She was threatened with a felony if she didn't do it. Of course along the way she really blew money on stupid stuff like her boyfriend making a music video. She ultimately refused to put the money away so she was charged with a felony. She didn't care that would really ruin her chances for finding a good job. Even the pastor who started out wanting to help her began to see the light when she was refusing to go on job interviews he got for her.
I won't say I would never do it again but I would definitely think twice.

There was a woman in Arizona with a similar story. Her case was discussed at length here.
