I guess as long as people will give $ people will ask for $.

In our area we have fund raising dances, dinners, bike rides, etc. Merchants give items to be raffled off and there are 50/50s. Families make and donate food. There are many things to do to help and all of the money collected is but into a bank account for the family. No funny games and no need to give away collected money to pay for collecting it. Usually the family being helped is there to be given love and support if they wish. Ex. homes lost to fire, family member died after illness and hugh medical bills,a little girl needed a wheelchair so she could go to school, etc. There are many expenses that are out of pocket even when you have insurance. His comp insurance paid all the medical bills for my husband but I had to pay for frequent trips in and out of state for his required medical appts for 15 yrs. We managed but we gave up alot to do it on our own. Knowing the unknown extra expenses medical emergencies can bring I go to local fund raisers even when I do not know the family. As long as it is legit I can spare some money, have a good time and help in any way possible. Who said " there but for the grace of God.......,". Im sorry I don't remember the exact quote.

My knowledge of Go Fund Me is from local news reports of tragedies where a GFM account has been established for a local family whose home has burned, or poor parents whose child has been killed and there is no money for a funeral. The news team verifies the bank handling donations.
This is typically the way I hear about donating to Go Fund Me as well, though I know far less worthy individuals ask for handouts there. Much good is done from GFM, and I'm too cynical to give much attention to the tacky beggars.

Those I mentioned didn't ask for anything, it was set up for them.

It makes me uncomfortable when I see GoFundMe requests on my HS FB forum. I used to see many of my classmates post there but when the admin (who is a classmate of mine) start posting a few of them, many stopped posting there. I am sure I am not the only one made to feel uncomfortable about this.
I realize some set up these sites because they have legitimate needs, but we must always plan for the unevitable or make sure we cover our bases in case the wolf appears at our doorstep.
I do not contribute to these GoFundMe sites because of the rep it has gotten by those who are abusing the original purpose of it.

It's getting so popular on FB that I'm beginning to think it needs to be banned. Do it on the sites designated for that.

Over the years I've received requests. Some are legit. Some aren't. I never feel obligated to give.
I guess the thought is it doesn't hurt to ask.

There is even an option when you go log out of FB on the drop down menu to 'send money' or 'payment history'.

I don't think I specified who was asking. I just said people not recipients or those asking on behalf nor did I say I agree or disagree about gofundme. I'm sorry if I gave that impression.
Has as anyone here set up a gofundme account?
