I don't give to any go funds.  I know the gofund "game" which honestly may not apply to all the posters but I have a good lesson as to why I don't give.

A metro bus driver died and his daughter had insurance but she set up a good fund so OTHERS would pay for the funeral then she KEPT the money from the insurance to pay her bills, etc.  That taught me a lesson, people are asking not because they might not have it, some are asking because they don't want to "SPEND" their money but if you can pay the expense for them they are happy.

Another example, my husband's brother is a "professional student" which is another Federal scam, you just keep getting grants and stay in school and then your wife works or you live somewhere cheap and the grant money is your spending money.

In any event, he is a would be movie producer and he had a go fund for his movie production, yet as we heard through the family grapevine, he has no script, no director, no nothing, it was just a scam to get money.

I'm sure many of you might of heard of the boy who got shot in some gang action due to his father, the boy was living with his grandmother when he was shot, yet the mother and father set up seperate go funds.  People where on line talking about 1) the boy did not even live with the parents  - the grandmother had all the expenses, apparently the parents were street, drug types and they set up a fund to get free money and 2) the newspaper in chicago found out that the mother use the money to purchase a car while not paying for the funeral or any of the expenses.

Yes, I heard about the boy's mother buying a car with that money but I didn't know the father got money, too.  It was said that the father was the reason that the boy was killed, if we're talking about the same incident.  Sad all the way around.

Because of three bad cases you think this is a scam? So when a needy person needs help you won'y be there because of the three cases that you mentioned?

I find any requests for money appalling if the request comes from the one in need. There are many people who encounter emergency financial problems and I am truly happy to help when I can, but usually it is a community member, coworker, friend or family member who initiates the collection. If someone doesn't have anyone to do that, our community has a place to go for help like that.

So people in need should never ask for monetary help.

Let them go without food for their family or medicine for a sick child so they don't offend anyone.

No they should ask for help....from churches(they will help anyone at least mine will if you go with a sincere request)

There are tons of organizations that will help you....a lot of them Christian but other ones too...too many to list.  Americans are the most generous people in the world.

The GFme account that about turned my stomach but made me laugh too. A fifteen year old boy in our neighborhood set up one for HIMSELF' to top it off, he needed  five thousand to go to Hollywood and try out for modeling! He is good looking, at least he must think so,  red gold hair etc. but this one I could not believe. I think he got a thoudand at one time, and then I think his parents funded him. He didn't get any where modeling, that is another scam anyway.

If I was presented with a Go Fund Me situation I'd assess whether I thought it was a worthy cause or not, and either give...or not; most likely not. I don't see such requests all that often unless it's something in the news. I had a friend who started a Go Fund Me page to help her pay for unexpected vet bills. This, I get - not everyone has pet insurance or an extra $5000. Still, she was not a close friend and I did not donate; for a close friend I would have.

The people who start Go Fund Me pages for what is in essence "Give me money so I can go do this thing I don't have the money for" reasons are nothing more than panhandlers. I don't give to panhandlers - ever.

But I'm my final arbiter of what I'll contribute to, and why. I have contributed to Indiegogo and Kickstarter for inventions, where I will get something for my money.

Good points @Moonchilde. With all things people should be careful. There'll always be someone abusing a system and these online fund sites are open to abuse.

I've donated twice to GoFundMe accounts.  One was for a friend whose mother was the victim of a violent crime.  They lived in different parts of the country, and my friend needed additional funds for travel and other expenses.

The other fund was for a former co-worker who had passed away unexpectedly.  She left behind a husband and two very young children.  The funds were being put aside for the kids' future education.

In both cases, these accounts were arranged by other people (family members or friends).  I felt comfortable contributing as both situations were legitimate and the people involved had financial challenges.

I haven't seen any crazy or frivilous excuses for donations, however I'm sure that they do exist.

The only ones I have a soft spot for are the medical ones.  Funerals - that one always confounds me bc from the moment you are born you know death will eventually come so why is it always such a surprise?  And, if you don't have money, only do what you can afford.  Dad had an insurance policy and even so, still only wanted to be cremated and my mother had died 40 years prior so he already had the family plot.  Had he not had the plot, we would have sprinkled his ashes and called it a day.  Dad's cremation and the costs for death certificates and those type requirements were just under $3000.   Much better than the $10,000 most funeral go fundme's request.

Earlier this year, my dad pre-paid for his cremation, death certs, etc.

Cost only $900.
