Giving a dog a home

I am considering adopting a small dog from a shelter. My concerns are that as I am a woman of a certain age, I may not be in a position to commit for too many years.

As an avid animal lover, I miss the love, companionship and loyalty that dogs so willingly give.

Bottom line: would it be fair to adopt at this time in my life?
