Haddon9: if you don't know the diff you have a lot to learn.

When Mom was in a retirement home she enjoyed getting the gift cards. She would use them to get her hair done at the community, things like that. I don't mean Target gift cards, but ones that are sold at the Retirement Home,

@Group 5 minus 1 That's a great idea!  I don't know if they have those where my mother is.  I haven't been there yet.   She was near me for the past 16+ years.  With this move, she's near my siblings.... a larger support system than just one.

Not flowers, picture in frames. The elderly get tired of junk like this.

One year we gave Mom new sheet sets and she loved those. Another year a chenille bed spread.

I would give socks.  I like the "gripper" socks.  I also like the "Heat Holder" socks that have a space to insert the heating pouches.

They are sisters, so I would make it fun and find the wildest,  craziest socks.

These ideas (some of them) are NOT good. People move to Retirement Communities for many reasons, but they are not infirm, etc.

Stamps are great, but Mom could buy these at the desk.

Food--if these people are diabetic bad idea. Also the dining room provides food.

Where Mom was the dinig room did not serve soda and many of the residents missed it.

DH andI had both Moms in a Retirement Community so we are a little knowledgeable about stuff.

I agree with this.  When my friend had a party for her mother's 100th birthday, that's what she suggested I bring as a gift.

You know, I think we should ask for a forum labeled "Seniors".  There's a number of questions for this category, where one could come to easily to get some of these answers.  We have people who are seniors, have tended to seniors, or are care givers or children to seniors.  It just would take it all in one area and really help those out who need the info.  Just an idea.

Couple of the things I did for Mom,but she was my Mom so some of these may not work.

Did her laundry

Decorated her door for all the holidays.

Older ladies typically have boxes of tissues .  Maybe a pretty tiisue box holder would be a practical gift.

They make lots and lots of foods that are sugar free and suitable for diabetics.
