Gifted & Talented Program.....yea or nay?

My son has been "nominated" to be tested for the GATE program. The letter just came in the mail today. I checked the school website but the only info they have about the program is a page with a new teacher's name on it 'under construction'. The letter states they have to score 95% in certain categories to qualify.

I don't know much about these programs other than the law was put into place for them to be offered in 1988 definetely after my time.

Does anyone have any experience either pro or con with these programs.
