Has anyone given or gotten a Visa gift card and did you or the recipient have trouble using it? DH has gotten them from his employees and never had trouble.

My DD is telling me where she works (upscale restaurant that takes all credit cards) shes always having trouble putting gift card Visas through and it says the person has to add money when they are NOT even over their balance. (And she believes the people because she has a regular clientele).

Im just wondering because even though DH never had any trouble using his, DH gave his 2 nieces them for Christmas and they never said anything about them not being able to use them. (But the way his family is they probably would not tell us, where as we would say something).

(Now that I know this, I am also going to ask them next time we talk to his sister, the mother of the nieces, who lives elsewhere).

I've had cards' TOS state restaurants frequently add 20% due to the expected tip so the balance needs to accommodate that or it will be denied.

I've seen that done. Its very annoying too because you want to just pay the bill and leave the tip separately.

When using these cards you have to know the balance. If you have for instance $49.99 on your card but the bill is $50. the card will be denied if the waiter/waitress enters $50.

Yes, we've had problems. When we give any gift card, we now also give the receipt to show there was actually money put on the card.

2 of the worst places to try to use them......restaurants and gas stations.....so i just avoid using them in those types of places.

Ok thank you for your replies. I don't think they add 20% on. And my daughter would have said that's why it went over. She spoke as if there was plenty on the card (s). But I will double check due to your replies, because maybe I am wrong. And I am sure our nieces (on DHs side), probably will do mall shopping so theirs should be OK, but I am still going to make sure of that too.
