In my area the stores have a big problem with this, because the ordinances covering this type of thing state the store *can't prevent it* if it's so many feet from the front door. Unless organizations are rightinfront of the business's door way, accosting people as they grab a cart, the store can't make them disappear. They set up shop on "public" walkways within a shopping center, or in the parking lot where you have to go by them. Stores put up huge signs in the parking lots that basically say they're helpless in the face of the law/ordinance as written, and that the stores don't wan them there. It gets very bad indeed when someone or other wants to get a measure on the state ballot or fund-raise.

That's a very strange ordinance because if they're in a shopping center, they're still trespassing on private property. The owner of the property, whether it be the store or another owner, should have the right to boot trespassers.

I have been trying to find information on the law but it's hard to narrow it down with search terms. If the businesses could get rid of them, they would, happily. They want them gone. But in front of drug stores, supermarkets, and stores like Target and Wal-Mart and even Whole Whole Foods, they are there. With signs from the stores saying if you ignore them they will leave (but they are never ignored and never leave). My thought is why don't they change the law, but I can only conclude that most people don't want it changed or it would have been challenged by now.

Re: Getting Ambushed at the Grocery Store

I seldom shop on weekends, so I think I miss all of this.

If you have to shop on Saturdays or Sundays, maybe if you go earlier in the morning, or later in the day...you'll miss this?

Not saying you should shop when it's inconvenient for you, but if it doesn't make a difference, just go when they aren't on duty!

Re: Getting Ambushed at the Grocery Store

The store I worked at anyone that wanted to sell had to get permission from the manager to set up....we often had Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts...the Bell Ringers at Christmas..(.they could sit inside but not ring their bells...) and others sold items ....the parents made sure the kids didn't accost the customers.. all the kids were very polite...I guess we were lucky...

Being an employee they never asked me....

I'm tired of the peddling of cookies and popcorn and candy at so many stores.

I just smile and say, "No, Thank You", if I'm not interested or if I don't have money on me at the time. If someone persists, I use the broken record technique....I just keep politely repeating my original refusal.

I say "no thank you " too.

Me too.

The only time I see people representing causes is at Christmas we have the Salvation Army and at Memorial Day the VFW sells poppies. I give and they are grateful.
