I hope the authorities are blanketing the medical community, it's entirely possible he 'doctor shopped' in the past......

It could have been just a common cold or some other illness. I went to a clinic (urgent care) for a urinary tract infection and they gave me one of those notes. I think they give them so you can stay home and get paid. I never even asked for one. I am not sure what they do in Germany. The clinic said they were not treating him for depression.

I think it may come out it had something to do with the girlfriend.

TaxyLady, as a german I can tell you it is relatively easy to get a certificate/note from a medical professional to declare you unfit for work. I never ever took advantage of this but some people do.

I think it is easy here in the states too. Like I said. I never asked for it. The doctor said I should rest a couple of days. I guess he gave the note to prove I was sick but I didn't need it. It seems strange to me a man would go to a clinic for a mental illness. Don't they have specialist in Germany for people with mental illness. We may find out he was never treated for mental illness. I think they are jumping the gun with the note.

Yes we have medical specialists that treat all types of mental illness. Like here we also have clinics - as a matter of fact we have an excellent one here in my town. I agree with you we don't yet know what he was treated for. -- As an aside, Duesseldorf was my home for about four years. All of us are stunned by this development.

Emmysmom,

Are you aware that FAA rules for commercial pilots in the U.S. set the minimum age at 18?

Omg! No, I wouldn't want an 18yo pilot..thats scary!

Haca, they showed a picture of his home, it looks like a lovely town. I come from a German background and I was over there as a child and remember how beautiful it was..also toured Switzerland..gorgeous!

Hi emmysmom nice to meet you. Yes his parents' home with a slate roof looks typical for Montabaur in the Westerwald region. I feel so sorry for them. Glad you have and remember your childhood memories. My family is still in Germany living in all corners and I visit almost every year. Skype is a great tool to stay in touch.

I dunno, there's a lot of grey areas. May be treatment was for a minor case of depression, which under some circumstances would not automatically be a trigger to contact an employer. I'm only getting bits and pieces from the news so my opinion could change by the end of the day, lol. I also thought psych screening was done before hiring, may be that's just in the US.

Is the doctor legally required to report to the employer in Germany? In the US? How does that work? Seems like there would be exception to a patient's assumption of privacy, but who makes that decision when? I don't even know US law.
