This movie is getting more attention for not being released than it would have had it been released.

I suspect you are correct. I heard it had already gotten lukewarm reviews from some critics.

Re: George Clooney's Petition

According to CNN, the president said that Sony "made a mistake" in cancelling a release of the movie after the cyber attack. He went on to say, "We cannot have a society in which some dictator some place can start imposing censorship here in the United States," O'bama said. "That's not who we are. That's not what America is about."

The president said that the U.S. will respond to NK, but he didn't say how. Whatever they decide to do, I hope it's effective.

Re: George Clooney's Petition

SONY is in such a difficult place here. We can all use our 20/20 hindsight and say that the movie should have used a fictional dictator name and this situation would not have occurred. I must agree with that assessment. However it has occurred. it turns my stomach to know that SONY backed off releasing the movie and yet I understand why. in addition to perhaps putting those who wanted to see the movie at risk it also put everyone in any of the adjacent theaters at risk. In addition many movie goers would avoid any theater complex where the movie was showing thus causing a substantial loss of revenue to other films being shown. I really do not think SONY had any good options but to do what they did. however I am deeply concerned that by acceding to the hackers demands we are opening ourselves up to future attacks of this nature.

He was very clear and also said Sony should have spoken with him.

I don't blame the movie theater business owners for not wanting to take the chance. Who wants their movie theater blown up and hundreds of people killed? I hope they will still release the movie, either On Demand or other means for people to see it. It's okay to keep it out of the theaters, but people should be able to buy it or see it in the privacy of their own homes.

Re: George Clooney's Petition

What choice did Sony have when theater owners were refusing to show the film?

Like George said, everyone needs to stand together. I don't believe the threats were based in any reality but I understand the fear of it.

Re: George Clooney's Petition

Not condoning what NK has done at all, but I think it was stupid/wrong to make a movie that included assassinating the real leader of a country, and showing it.

We would have a fit if someone showed that happening to a real POTUS, not a fictional one. We wouldn't act out as they have done, but Sony should have seen some retaliation coming.

The leaders of NK are crazy and have been playing with missiles.

Yet, apparently Mr. Clooney, the darling of moral causes, sees absolutely nothing wrong with a film advocating the assassination of a living political leader in this "hilarious" romp through the bumbling attempts of its two stars. WHO finds any assassination fodder for frivolity and mirth? Sorry, George, but I expect you to look at ALL aspects of this irresponsible film, not just the ones that affect Hollywood. The hornets' nest has been poked, and no one should be surprised at the reaction.

I think Clooney is a knucklehead but this is not the first time a movie has depicted similar content, is it?

I don't know, Syd, since that would not be my choice of movie to see. I am sure fictitious assassinations have been depicted in the movies, but the assassination of a standing leader? Someone else will have to enlighten us on that. I just don't remember any, unless they were depicting an actual historical event.
