Sounds convenient but I don't want to take my phone out when I'm shopping.  Now if the store had portable scanners to hand out to customers I'd be up for that.  Also, I will never pay for anything from my phone so another reason why one of their portable scanners would be my choice and then I'd have to pay for it at a self check out lane or one of the others. The guy who stands by at the self check out lane has a portable hand held scanner and often will come by and just scan everything in my cart to be a nice guy.  It takes him less time than any checker.

They do have portable scanners - at least at the stores I go to.  There's no need to even own a phone.  And you don't have to store a credit card anywhere.

Re: GROCERY STORE-CHECK YOURSELF OUT APPS!!!!

In my neck of the woods, department stores as well as the grocery stores has had those check yourself out apps for years.  It all started in the grocery stores first.  Personally I've never used it as I like to be "serviced."

I don't even bag my own groceries.  That's the UNIONIZED  cashiers job.

Self-checkout is fine enough for me.

Our Stop and Shop has had a scan and pack your own groceries for several years now.  I've used it occasionally, but I'd just as soon scan each item at the self-checkout.  The shoppers I see using the scan tool most effectively in the aisles are those who have four or more bags open and they sort their items as they go; probably makes putting things away at home much easier.

For my bigger orders, I use the traditional cashiers.

We will soon need a national income for our citizens as all of these jobs are cut.

I use it at Sams Club and I love it.  Used to hate going there because no matter what time of day there are always long lines to check out.  I scan as I put the items in my shopping cart.  Hit the checkout button when I'm done and head to the door.  I love walking right past the longs lines.  Now I enjoy shopping there.

Re: GROCERY STORE-CHECK YOURSELF OUT APPS!!!!

In my opinion, the days of service are soon to be over.

My husband still calls gas stations "service stations"

which always amuses me.

Yes, stores are moving in the direction of self check-out.

Banks have few 'tellers", as people line up at ATMs.

I know people who have told me they have not been inside

a bank in at least a decade.

And yes, that means jobs are being eliminated.

Two days ago,  I wandered into a Nordstoms in SF to buy some clothes for my toddler grandson.  The store had very few shoppers and an incredibly poor, limited selection.  The Macys

nearby is closing.  I left empty handed.

This is something new our grocery store chain, HEB, is experimenting with an electronic self scan and checkout in just a few stores.......

Its a special scanning device and it allows you to pay and check yourself out as you shop ....My sister loves it, you just scan your item and she puts it in her recycle bag.  She can bag her groceries the way she likes as she shops and she says its so easy and no hastle of waiting in long lines.  You turn in the apparatus at a special station and they dont even check it to make sure you scanned everything you bagged.  To me it seems like if there are no check points wont they experience a lot of shrinkage if someone unintentionally or intentionally didnt scan a item?

My sister said the store manager said just a few stores are experimenting to see how it goes before they expand it to all their stores.........

Walmart is also testing its Scan & Go mobile app in a few states. Here’s how it works: Shoppers use either an app on their phones or a store-issued scanner to scan items as they walk around the store, probably putting them directly in bags instead of bagging them later.

When they’re ready to check out, shoppers bring their pre-scanned items to a self-checkout register, scanning a single barcode on the kiosk to purchase all items in the cart. They can also register a credit card with the Scan & Go app to pay

instantly without even having to wait in the self-checkout line.

Now Walmart has a special person in a yellow vest assigned to check over contents of the bags versus HEB that doesnt.....

What do you all think????????????

My son, who is in college in another city, said Walmart is doing this and he loves it.

Yes, I agree.  However,  many stores doesn’t hire people who really care about customers.  Target used to have nice people.  Not now.  They are getting like Walmart all the time.  I don’t mind going through the self check aisle, if I have a few items.  But, if I have a full cart I want to go through the regular aisle.  Unfortunately, our Walmarts or Targets don’t have enough checkers.
