I quit Facebook years ago but wonder why they require a phone# now.  That would be enough for me to quit it again.

FWIW, my go-to for faking a number, if I have no other choice, is just 7777777777.     I feel something like that has to be used because I would never want to accidentally punch in somebody's actual phone number.  Smiley Happy

Re: GETTING INTO FACEBOOK WITHOUT A MOBILE NUMBER

Take my advice....make up a number.  I should have done that when I had an account.

When I had my first FB account, they got into my address book on my computer, and helped themselves.  I shut it down.

I was missing some of my sewing and needlework groups, so I eventually opened another account.  I opened it on a Windows tablet, using a modified version of my name, and a different email address.  All of my other stuff is on my Mac devices.  But, not thinking, I put in my cell phone number.  They then began tracking me on my iPhone and iPad.  I could tell this by the ads that were popping up on my account.

I've been told that they store your last 5 telephone numbers that you enter.  So, I just shut it down.  I won't use FB anymore.

And when you shut down an account, they don't delete your information.  Before I shut down the second account, I used the same picture of myself to see what would happen....they use facial recognition....and began sending me friends suggestions from my old account.

I'd rather pay a monthly fee, and participate in a site that has some scruples!

I signed up for FB extra security using my cell phone #. If I sign out and have to log back in they send me a text with a code to get into FB - if I don't use the code I can not log in.

This way if a hacker tries to take over your acct the code is not sent to their phone - instead it is sent to the number I have listed for FB. That's the only time they text me.

Me too.  In the 10 years I've been using Facebook, I've never received an unwanted text.  From Facebook, advertisers, or anyone.
