Front load washer/dryer vs. top load?

Can anyone tell me what the benefits of having front load machines rather than top load? Do the front load machines hold more clothes? Do they use less water? I would appreciate any thoughts you have on this subject, as Lowe's will be having a front loading set on sale on Black Friday. Thanks!
