i've always used a top load washer/dryer until we moved into this place over a year ago. we got a samsung front load with the steam feature. it washes and dries well, no problems so far, so i can't complain.

I've got a Bosch washer/steam-dryer with pedestals and love them! I have a disc problem and until I got front-loads, everytime I did laundry I'd have to take it easy the next day, but with no bending the problem is resolved. Some people say their washer smells: I take a paper towel and wipe the inside front glass, then the inside door rubber (two layers) and have had no problem whatsoever. IMHO, Bosch makes a good product that are very hard to beat.
May I suggest, if you don't need them immediately, wait 'til new model time. When my top-load went years ago it was on Memorial Day weekend. After shopping around, I got a terrific deal: the owner asked if I would consider purchasing a blue (quite pretty, IMO) floor model as it had not been a popular color, although people had opened doors, etc., said sure and I got an excellent deal and he got to make room in his appliance showroom (also quick delivery!).
And, I wouldn't rely on consumer reports as it seems cr's ratings and totalling different to their customers' reviews!

I owned a pair of front loaders and never again. The washer especially was a pain, even though I had a maintenance plan. The seals got really smelly--never again!

I have a Kenmore set right now that my dh picked out. My first front loader. I now prefer the front loader because I believe it's easier on your clothes and gets them cleaner. When I first got mine, my daughter was on the phone and she said, "Mom, put in a load of clothes with NO soap. When it starts washing, look in the washing machine window". I did and it was full of soap suds even though I had not added detergent. My clothes come out much softer because all of the soap is coming out. My dd had a job that was along those lines, that's why she knew what would happen and asked me to do the experiment. I also keep the door slightly open between washings and sometimes run a cycle with just bleach. No smelly.

I've had a LG for quite a while now. I have never had any issues with it. On the day I wash I just leave the door open all night to dry out. I've never had any problems with smell.

Front load dryers are one thing, but I've not heard much good about front load washers. I also think the top loaders are easier to access.

I have had 1 front loader washer and really disliked it it was a GE. I got rid of it within 6 months of purchasing the washer.
I have an LG dryer and like that dryer (it has the steam function).
I am a top load washer gal. My speed queen washer is a work horse.

@ilovefall wrote:I've had an LG front load washer for a little over 8 years and I can't wait to get rid of it (the dryer is fine). I hate it. I have to keep the door open all the time or else it smells like nobody's business! The rubber seal has to be kept clean and wiped down constantly because the build up is slimy and gross. I could gag whenever I have to clean it. Mine also has a little door at the bottom left corner/front of the machine. When you open the door, there is a thin rubber hose that you have to empty out. The smell is enough to knock you over. It smells like horrible rotten eggs. The water that comes out is dark and it's like there is sand in the water. I then have to turn the plastic filter that is there and go wash that off with hot soapy water and then screw it back in. I have no idea if people with newer front load washers have to go thru this once a month or even have this problem. Anyway, I'm hoping to get rid of them this year and get myself the newer top load washer without the agitator in the middle. Good luck!
Funny, I have the front loading LG with all the bells and whistles, and don't have any of the problems you are having. My DH cleans out that thin rubber hose and there is never a smell at all. The plastic filter just needs a quick rinse and back in it goes. The only complaint I would have is that the filter is hard to get in and out. I just wipe down the rubber gasket after every use and there is never a slime on it.. I do leave the door open after using so never had a mildew order either.
I love that I don't have to lift heavy items out of a top loader. Would purchase again.

My wife curses our front load washer on a weekly basis because it stinks so I am buying her a new top load washer for Valentine's Day.
