I think that as we get older, we tend to complain more. And also, we're more easily annoyed. So, simply put, longtime friends who complain more annoy us more!

I agree that we're probably more easily annoyed, but while some feel much freer to complain as they get older, I don't think we all do - as evidenced by the feelings people have expressed here about those who are always complaining ;-)
I watched my mother, who had no need to do so, complain about anything and everything for the last 20 years of her life. I have a horror of doing that. Also, I think whether one has worked and what kind of a work situation one has had has an effect on how much one complains. At work, it is often made plain that no one wants to hear it and you could lose your job over it, so you button it more than if you never worked or were your own boss.

WOw, this is exactly what I have been thinking of a so called friend. I will say , WASN,t that wonderful about something, because if I say, What did you think about it, I get a negative remark. Everything is no good, no matter what you say. She drains me. She doesn,t listen to what you are saying in a conversation. I told her what I did today and 10 minutes later, she ask me what did you do today? She is down on everything. Every thing in a conversation is about her and repeats all the time..
I have her call me every day, she has no family here, and I want to make sure she is OK, but I ask her just not between five and six unless an emergency. So she calls everyday @ five fifteen. She knows what she is doing, just being obstinate. Says, I don,t look @ the cclock. Then she proceeds to complain about everything. I have stopped going places with her because of the complaints.

God Bless you! That must be so wearing. I know the woman must be lonely but she is only driving people away with that constant harping and negatvity.

How true! I couldn't say it better!!

I agree with you. Sometimes a friendship is just beyond saving.

Real friends stick by you no matter what. They are not a real freind if they are only around for the fun and games. Then, when you have problems -- they take the powder. That's what my mother used to refer to as "fair weather" friends and who needs them!!!!

It seems all of my life I have had an "instinct", for lack of a better term, to avoid people that bring me down. I choose my friends carefully and if I don't feel good after leaving an introduction, I make myself scarce.

Sorry but this is not always true. Some friendships become draining, particular as we age. A change in health, marriage, job, etc can affect a friendship. Even the most supportive friend will tire of the woe is me talk.
