I think the pandemic had something to do with it, too. For me, if I had stores to go to, I would hurry and get out as fast as possible and didn't have time to browse, altho I was never rude. I try to picture being in their shoes.
Now I enjoy going to stores. Not so scared. No masks so you can smile at people and have simple conversations. Time to browse. I enjoy being nice to people and being helpful. Maybe it's selfish, but it makes me feel good to think maybe I helped someone feel better.

By and large we are still warm and friendly folks. I do worry however, about some (not all) of the younger entitled crowd I sometimes encounter.
@Sooner "Hon" or "Sugar" is not always said in a well intended way. Many times it is said to keep people in "their" place.

I live in a city with a population over 1.5 million....the drivers are TERRIBLE, however, outside of "the road", people are very friendly, caring, and helpful........We bill our city as "A big city with a small town heart".............

Living in the same location as the OP, I find the way people treat me is often based on my own mood. Rudeness I rarely if ever encounter and that stands for any state I have lived in. I have always believed, for the most part, if we are friendly and warm, we get back what we give... Sounds kind of Pollyanna but definitely has been my experience.
@Trinity11 Very well said!!!
I have been reading these posts, and it appears the "rudeness" are complaints about driving. I don't drive, so maybe that is a blessing.

@NYCLatinaMe , I drive in Manhattan often. Everything is so slow that I find the driving on the LIE a lot more tedious.

I don't hear these expressions in NYC @Sooner, so no. I did hear they were used in Albany, and not in a good way.
