Free Community College - Good Idea? Bad Idea?

I remember when it was VERY affordable for everybody - like $300 a semester.

Now one or two textbooks cost $300!

How about reducing the costs of our University's?

Great idea----for the students who attend for free. Problem is someone has to pay for this. Where will the money come from?

An excellent idea but I haven't read how it would be implemented. Going to a community college first and then transferring naturally cuts the cost of a university degree.

The students work it off on community projects later.

I don't think we can afford free but the current status of community college funding in California is terrible. You can't even get the classes you need because there aren't enough offerings relative to the number of students. Many low income students can get fee waivers then they can't even afford to buy the books which can cost more than the class fee itself.

If students chose these community colleges, universities would have to find ways to be more affordable, if they want to remain competitive.

Universities are privately run (on the most part) and can set whatever tuition they feel the market can bear. If they had some real competition, they might need to adjust costs.
