I like Jack-in-the-Box and Carl's Jr.

Well, actually, I've only eaten at two of the restaraunts named, but always felt fine afterwards.
On the other hand, both my friend and I got quite ill after eating at a highly rated, local restaurant.
you just never know....small family run places might not be the best choices.

My mother was really into health food so I didn't eat at a fast food chain til my mid to late teens when I was with my friend. I literally went nuts and was so excited to order from the menu and my friends thought it was so bizarre. I can't say there was a burger or anything I liked at any of the fast food restaurants but I LOVED McDonalds apple pies when they were fried. Does anyone remember those? I got one several years ago and they aren't fried anymore, they are baked and nothing at all like I remember. I don't know if they did it to be healthier which always makes me laugh considering the rest of their menu but the fried pies were the bomb.

Yes, Wienerschnitzel. As a kid I used to LOVE their hot dogs. Corn dogs, chili dogs, Polish Sausage dogs... they were all good. Haven't eaten there in at least 20 years and thought the franchise went under. A couple of months ago I was headed to a shopping center and was in shock when I saw a big yellow roof with red trim. A Wienerschnitzel! I had to stop and ordered a kraut dog and a chili dog. The anticipation was almost too much. I opened the wrapper and the chili dog looked awful. A sad limp hotdog covered by what could have been 59 cent canned chili. It tasted worse than it looked. The kraut dog was just okay. I shouldnt have stopped and kept that childhood memory untainted.

I do remember the McDonald's fried apple pies. They were like something we'd get at the county fair. Not an every day food...but an occasional treat.

Oh my gosh, those sinful fried apple pies from McDonald's were THE BOMB! I didn't have them very often, but when I did, I savored every bite! And you're right...the version they have now can't even compare to the old ones from days gone by!!

I'm wondering if they still have good burgers.
Which reminds me of Hamburger Hamlet, a very popular CA chain from the 60s and 70s. Slowly on, all but one has gone under. The second-to-last was in my most recent neighborhood; the last remaining was my high school hangout.
@MoonchildeI LOVED Hamburger Hamlet- the Brunchburger with the fried egg on top was truly ahead of its time. and the Pears Alaska for dessert..well, I went there every birthday (cause I got o choose!)!
Although the Lake Ave HH in Pasadena was my "home" store growing up, I also went to UCLA, so know the one you speak of..They were family owned and there is a great FB page "I grew up on Westwood Village in the 1970's" that talks lot about the family and the HH nostalgia..
Also, Weinerschnitzel (or DER Weinerschitzel as we knew it then) hasnt been the same since they went to chicken dogs for their corndogs! And beef suet REALLY DID make the difference in McDonalds fries and Freid apple pies!

I always got a kick out of the Hamburger Hamlet in Beverly Hills with the valet parking. They had the best fried zucchini!

@Mothertrucker, I've eaten at the one in Westwood, but the last one I ate at was on Sepulveda in WLA - gone for several years. My hangout one was in Van Nuys and it's the last one. Two guys bought it from the family and have kept it completely the same as a tribute. Loved to go there for Sunday brunch, when Sunday brunch was just being in invented ;-)
Speaking of Pasadena, I was very sad to know Burger Continental closed. Talk about a one of a kind place!

I looove fried zucchini! But "those potatoes" were my "must order" - even when I had a burger, lol.
