Re: Found out why stores are closing!

I sure hope that in the future, we will be able to do our grocery shopping in a B&M store. We live in rural west Michigan and do our weekly shopping at Meijer’s ( we also go to lunch before shopping, as well as visiting local Menards or Lowe’s when needed). I see that there is a big push now to do your grocery shopping online and pick it up in the store. That means that someone else will be shopping for you. Stores don’t always have EXACTLY what you want. Sometimes a substitution is OK and sometimes it’s not. I can’t imagine letting someone else pick out my groceries. We’ve all done it where maybe we couldn’t get out for one reason or another and had someone pick up a few things for us. But just ca’t imagine doing this on a weekly basis. Maybe when I get older or just can’t get out, it will be a blessing but I want the option to have big well- stocked grocery stores to shop in.

Re: Found out why stores are closing!

Was in my local Target store yesterday...what a mess.  The clearance ranks were so disorganized, the clothing dept had things all over the floor.  Empty racks, empty shelves.  Luckily, this store has self check so I was able to use that but the few cashier lines that were open were a few people deep.

The mall closest to my home is up for sale and has very few stores left...just JCP, Macy’s, Bath and Body Works, Victoria’s Secret and H&M..that is it.  No food court, it was replaced by a large chain sporting goods store which always seems empty.  It used to be a great place... now it is a shell of its former self.  Sad to see.

QVC can be pricey and the shipping is high but I would much rather shop here for clothing than deal with messy, unorganzied displays, flithy dressing rooms and miserable sales people who would rather be on their phones than helping you.

I am not superstitious, but I am a little stitious.

Re: Found out why stores are closing!

These stories aren't new.

Twenty years ago we thought all Macy's stores had some kind of magical doors.  As soon as we entered the store, we became invisible to everyone working there!

More than 10 years ago, I stopped going to the local TJMaxx ... the store smelled of dirty clothes, and torn and dirty clothes were on the racks!

It's been an issue with some of the larger stores for years and years.

There are exceptions ... Burlington and Nordstrom's Rack are two of the larger stores where it's a pleasure to shop.

Store #3 was Michaels.  ONE register was open, and another long line.  I left my full cart in the store;  didn't buy one thing.

Horrible customer service is at least partly to blame for stores closing.

Abandoning a full cart is the adult version of a 2yo temper tantrum.

It’s not ‘horrible service’...it’s employees time cleaning up after

entitled customers. I’ve been seeing this more & more.

Maybe we are the exception.  Our Belk store is beautifully staffed with the nicest, most helpful people.  Even the Manager is terrific.  Target, also nearby, is well staffed with people who care about the customers.  There's a Carter's store, an Ulta, Ross, JC Penney, Marshalls and more, and they are all well staffed with courteous, concerned sales people.  I don't know why it should be different elsewhere, but it would appear that we are the exception. Perhaps hiriing requirements are lax in other areas. Even our Winn Dixie managers wander through the store offering help. I'm sorry I can't join in your complaints, but the only store I've had difficulty in is Whole Foods, and it's not a store I llike shopping in anyway. Lousy prepared foods and not much i like there.   Fresh Market is great, so I don't need WF.  We're in S.E. Louisiana. Come join us . . .

We do quite a bit of shopping online; mostly Amazon.   I used to do most of my grocery shopping online with Fresh Direct but then we moved to NM.

The one thing I will never be able to do online is clothes shopping.   No matter what, they never fit.  The only clothes that usually fit are from J Jill . over the years I've found my size there but even that isn't always accurate.   When living in PA , I could hop in the car and return them to a store but we have no stores here and I'm not going to pay postage to get clothes back and forth.

I gave up shopping for clothes at QVC years ago for this same reason and judging from reviews I read, sizing is even more inconsistent now than when I quit.

So, I'll be in big trouble when all of the stores clothes.  I went to Dillard's last week to buy some pants.   Tried on a dozen or more and even then struggled to find a pair that were comfortable enough to buy .  The SA was very helpful and that was nice.   I bought one pair of jeggings.  They were much more than I usually spend but I was tired of looking and trying on after going to about 5 different places.

@ALRATIBA

You make an excellent point ----maybe the reason people stopped shopping at B&M stores is do to poor Management that doesn't really care and their employees don't either and are allowed to get away with it, so stores are filty, clothes and other merchandise thrown on the floor cluttering aisles...

What you described at your TJMaxx is exactly what's going on at Macy's in our city, and surprisingly at a very high end mall..At another mall the Burlington's is also a dirty junky mess ..But on the other hand our Target, TJ's, and Dillards, Stein Mart are neat and clean and a pleasure to shop in......Marshalls and even Ross did a 360 and went from being dirty catastrophic messes to clean, neat, organized, and nicely merchandised stores.  So it can be done with some effort if Management and employees cared about staying in business and keeping their jobs...

And as someone else said, B&M stores are putting themselves out of business by carrying majority of stuff online and not in the store, a balanced approach would make more sense...

Yesterday I did self-Scan at Walmart to avoid lines but no larger bag available to put my items in. On way out there stood employee watching front of store for people who order on line and pick up. In store customers of lesser value than on line. Sad State of affairs.

This is so true, @Twins Mom .  At Nordstrom's big sale I was shopping in store.  The employees were all filling online orders for people to pick up or try on in store.  They would mow you over to get to items.  At the register they would deal with people calling in to get items and leave you standing at the register forever.  To say nothing of the fact so many clothes were pulled and put aside for people to maybe come in to try on to see if they want vs. the paying customer in store ready to buy.   Needless to say we didn't shop for long and gave up and walked away from the register.

Re: Found out why stores are closing!

I don’t have the time to traipse through a mall when I can scan dozen of products online in minutes without dealing with crowds and lines. I prefer to try things on at home because the dressing rooms are small, lighting is bad and more likely just to buy something in the heat of the moment.
