People NEED to hear this. There was a time that being a doctor, a lawyer, an accountant, majoring in finance or business was the thing to do because you would be guaranteed a well paying job for life.

Not anymore.

Trade schools are being encouraged to my boys. My county High Schools started last year having Vo-Tech speakers come in along with college reps to speak to students; guess who NOW has the biggest turn out from students?

I agree @SahmIam as I see what has happened with IT jobs in this country.  We have talented, trained IT specialists watching their jobs being outsourced or replaced by low paying consultants under the H1B visa programs.

I would encourage parents with children looking for a vocation to look to the trades/hands on jobs that simply cannot be offshored.

It seems that posters (not just you, mtc) assumed I was talking about IT jobs.  I wasn't.

I'm not sure why that assumptio was made.

To me, "new age" jobs would be those that public and private industry needs going into the future.

Oh @QueenDanceALot when I mentioned IT jobs I was speaking to my own personal angst as both me and several of my friends are struggling to find employment these days especially if you are older.

I know that solar and wind energies are a bad word for many folks but I don't understand why renewable energy is so shunned.  Please know I understand that many companies have failed but I would also highlight that many innovative companies have failed until they found the right mix otherwise we would still be riding around in a horse and buggy and lighting our homes with candles (and clearly not the flameless versions).  I would love to see a bigger push for renewable energy which could bring manufacturing jobs to areas that are really hurting as their livelihood has been offshored.

I am sorry you are having such a difficult time, mtc.  It's so hard out there.  A good friend and neighbor of mine who is also an IT person lost his job over 2 years ago, is in his 50's, and hasn't been able to find anything.  He is very discouraged.

I agree about renewable energy, it IS the future.  We don't give up because of failure!

We also have a HUGE need for expansive infrastructure rebuilding.  It will HAVE to be done!  All I hear is whining that we don't have the money.  Well, we won't have a country if we can't move people, goods and services.  Not everything can be done from a computer chair!  Other countries are so far ahead of us in this area!

Re: Ford to move to Mexico, build $1.6B plant, employ 2800

"New Age" jobs to me and others I know (especially with kids who are in debt for college degrees and/or are looking at college soon) refer to any job packaged for "the New Age" of technology usually (but not always) referring to IT in some area.

In MY world: any job that can be done where a person is NOT hands on can be outsourced to the other side of the world: banking, finance, accounting, data entry of any type, programming, coding, documenting, writing, etc. For NOW, we don't have robots skilled enough to be deliver babies, do surgery, take care of you in a hospital or home (those stairs would be tough), repair cars, trains, etc.  I think the vast majority understand what I'm saying.

As someone I know (who would know) once said : if you can do the job, whatever it is, sitting down.....it can be done by someone else for peanuts elsewhere. And yes, many "jobs of the future" are jobs where you sit down in front of a computer and don't leave until it's time to go home.

Thanks for your kind words @QueenDanceALot.  It's tough to keep applying for jobs especially when you see over 150 people have applied for the same position which for me is mindboggling.

I have given up trying to find an IT job but I would think my project management skills could be successfully applied in another area . . . apparently not . . . best of your luck to your friend, it's not easy these days.

I will keep sending good thoughts your way, mtc, that you will find something where you can use your skills and talent very soon!
