Re: For Those Who Don't Have Locked Mailboxes

My mailbox is across the street with two others.  I live in a dead end area and we have never had any trouble with our mail boxes but I do retrieve the mail everyday.

I wouldn't think putting a mouse trap in the mailbox is a smart idea.

That might even be against the law.  The postal worker has to safely put the mail in the box....

What person in their right mind would have a  mailbox that doesn't lock in this day and age?  Makes no sense whatsoever.

@chrystaltree  All the mailboxes on my street are at the end of our driveways by the road. The mailman comes in a truck and stops at each one and puts in the mail. How would he get into a locked one? Have never had a stolen or broken into problem.

The boxes are constructed so that mail can be put into the box, @proudlyfromNJ, but a key is needed to retrieve mail.

@tansy  Thanks, just googled them. Have never seen one before. Interesting.

Re: For Those Who Don't Have Locked Mailboxes

Fortunately, where we live we have locked boxes. They are a "gang box" with 12 homes at one place, so it is a bit of a hike to go and get the mail.DH usually rides his bike down to get it so I bought him a basket to put the mail into.

Re: For Those Who Don't Have Locked Mailboxes

Hi @tansy

We live on a rural drive mail route and I really do not know if USPS would deliver our mail if we had our mailbox locked.

I know our mailman well, as he got blamed for running down our neighbor's mailbox. I knew different and called his boss and he came out and talked with me. I saw from the path of the tracks in the snow, and the direction of the bent mailbox, there is no way our mailman could have done it. The damage to the mailbox was way too high for his vehicle to hit in the bent up spot.

I followed other tracks and it told me it was our trash pick up truck that knocked over that mailbox. I also called our trash company and they came out/talked with me, and agreed it was their truck that did the damage. They thanked me and also bought and set up and new pole and mailbox.

This neighbor and his wife are ding bats and called the USPS and blamed our postman. They could have done the same things I did, but that would have required them to be outside to do it. They are in their own little world and that is fine with me, as long as they don't bother us.

We live on an uphill(long and steep) gravel road cul-di-sac and it ain't easy for big vehicles to get going the other direction without using our, or the ding bat's driveway to get turned around, so I understand how these things can happen. The ding bat's? They stay in their fantasy bubble.

Managed to write a novel again, and this about a mailbox thread! I can't help myself. Anyways, we get our mail out of the box every day, and nobody can sneak into our area without leaving their tire tracks.

Hope you and yours are doing well,

Even locked boxes have been broken into. The vast majority are easily opened using a screwdriver.

Re: For Those Who Don't Have Locked Mailboxes

Our subdivision does not have an individual mail box in front of each house, instead we have a bank of community mail boxes for the neghborhood.

And there have been reports of these being broken into all around town...thankfully ours hasnt been hit yet..........They even did away with the Out Mail slot, since there was a problem with crooks stealing mail placed there.....  My advice make sure you pick up your mail and pick it up as soon as you can Monday through Saturday.....

Hi again @tansy, guess who?

My mailman was just here and he said he does deliver to locked boxes, but a lot of his mail will not fit in the slot on many boxes. Thus that person has to go to their Post Office to pick it up. He also said for him they are a "pain in the a**/buttocks".

Said thieves wouldn't risk here(1 way in 1 way out) and only 3 mailboxes. They prefer streets lines with boxes where they can have a driver and a someone will to risk being charged with a Federal Crime, riding shotgun.

Straight from my mailman, and his boss. They were wheeling off the measurements from my mailbox to the porch where he delivers our packages. They measure all routes and that is how they measure the time it thinks it should take to deliver certain routes.

What a coincidence, eh? Saw him standing at our backyard gate and thought maybe his truck broke down or the ding bat's blamed him for his wheel touching their sacred grass(weeds).

Bye now,

@Bri36 and I was thinking about here, the boy scouts or some kids group, occasionally puts flyers in the mailboxes, about upcoming food drives, wreath sales, etc.  Can you even imagine someone thinking a mouse trap is a good idea?
