Here is non-emotional information on the telescope plan but it means nothing to the Hawaiians who not only not want it built but more so want America out of Hawaii.

A Native Hawaiian Astrophysicist's Mana'o on the Thirty Meter Telescope

Do read the comments on this article for a good idea of both sides which are basically science vs honoring ancestral beliefs.
After much reading, I come away with a core intention of some Hawaiins expressed by one particular commenter:

"since cultural and social philosophy, principles, traditions and values form the identity of a people and a nation the movement to malama mauna a wakea is also significant because it illustrates our determination to finally and completely end the unlawful u.s. occupation of the hawaiian islands and to restore the kingdom and nation of Hawai'i."

I understand that emotion, people tend to want to drive out those who come in later. We see it here on our own soil. We can't live that way in reality.

when you're a bad guest.............when you abuse the hospitality of the people who live there......when you disrespect their beliefs, their customs, their way of life AND impose yourself and all your trappings upon people who do not want it.........grown tired of it and you (you as in the government and big business).....then yeah, you're gonna hear.......ya gotta go.....................raven
