We went to Thanksgiving dinner at my niece's house. There were about 20 of us at the dinner. My niece served the food dishes buffet style on her kitchen island and had seating in the dining room. She has a huge house, and the table was long and plenty big enough for all of us. She did a lovely job.
Unfortunately, her husband's sister and her husband . . . well, let's say, one would want to get into the food line in front of them. I didn't, because of my walker, I decided to wait until last. These two people practically ruined my dinner because, even though my niece had set out lovely serving spoons and forks for all the dishes, these people put the food on their plates with their hands. They fingered through the turkey slices until they found "just the right ones" I guess. They even served themselves the sliced cranberry sauce with their fingers, which obviously fell apart as they got it to their plates. The only things spared their hands were the mashed potatoes and the stuffing.
Later in the evening at dessert time, the husband's sister took over serving the desserts. She cut all the pies and cakes and served them with her hands, licking her fingers between each serving. Whether anyone minded besides me, I have no idea, but since I was sitting there waiting until last, I noticed it all. Needless to say, I had very little appetite by the time it was my turn, and I took no servings from her.
She was a pleasant person and of course I said nothing. I have seen many people serve food this way, even at weddings and in restaurants. However, I guess because of me, no one in my family does this.
Is this something that would bother any of you?
