Fluoride is it bad?

I've been reading about fluoride,and there is so many different studies and opinions.I had to go out and buy some toothpaste and didn't know if i should or shouldn't buy toothpaste with fluoride in it.Of course my dentist believes in it 100%.He also has no problem with the silver fillings.So i'm confused any smart ladies here know the real truth.thanx much
